Elmstead v Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 08 Jul 2017 at 13.00
Halstead Cricket Club Lost by 19 runs

Match report A poor performance in the field and a batting collapse ensure Halstead snatched defeat from the jaws of victory at Elmstead on Saturday.

On a pitch that offered significant help to the slow bowlers from the off, the hosts continued their strong performance at the top of Division One.

Joe Morris and Josh Wells both took a battering early on as Jordan Elliott (52) and Aidan O'Brien (35) got the Elmstead innings off to a flyer.

Smart work from Ed Clark ran out O'Brien whilst a Graham Wickes catch gave Sam Walter the wicket of Elliott soon after he passed 50.

Mark Perrin (41) and Ryan Vickery (83*) continued their good work, with Chris Rayner and Chris Huntington somewhat stifling the flow of runs, the latter dismissing Perrin.

The reintroduction of Joe Morris, this time bowling slow left arm, accounted for Dan White (19) and Peter Webster (6), with Charlie Douglas-Hughes dismissing Nikhol Ellis (8) and Walter dismissing Ashan Atmukoralage (7) as the hosts faltered toward the end of their innings, finishing on 280-7.

Wickes was adjudged LBW to the fourth ball of the reply, but Huntington was belligerent early on, helping Halstead to 71-1 off 10 overs alongside Neale Dakin.

Dakin (21) was also trapped LBW, but Wells joined his fellow left hander at the crease to move the scores on to 150 in the 20th over.

Huntington had passed his fifty in this time, moving on to 81 before he was dismissed in the 21st over.

Douglas-Hughes was solid alongside Wells as the skipper scored quickly, getting the visitors within 80 runs of their target and passing his fifty before wicketkeeper Vickery took off his pads and had him caught by Evans.

At 200-4 in the 31st over, Halstead looked in pole position, but the track became a spinners paradise and the middle-order weren't able to cope.

Douglas-Hughes reached his 50, but was caught by Atmukoralage off Perrin and Ed Clark was run out without facing as the Halstead chase ground to a halt, losing 5 wickets for 21 runs and finishing 19 short.

The result leaves Halstead in 7th place in the very congested midtable of Division One.
