Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Coggeshall on Sat 28 Jul 2018 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 12 runs

Match report Halstead - 277-9 - beat Coggeshall - 265 all out - by 12 runs

Halstead moved into second in the Two Counties table after winning a nail-biter over Coggeshall.

The game ebbed and flowed between the two sides with both variously holding the upper hand well into the final exchanges.

Josh Wells won the toss and elected to bat first, but lost both Chris Huntington (4) and Harry Pritchard (5) to Robert Cross (3-50) and George Blackwell (2-45) respectively, Jimmy Rees taking the catches behind the stumps.

From 15-2, Josh Ruthven (52) and Josh Wells (51) made steps to a strong recovery, the pair passing 50 in quick succession in their 103-run stand.

Ruthven tried to kick on after reaching his maiden 1st XI half-century but could only pick out Cross at mid-off with Wells trapped lbw in the same over as Kane Addison (2-52) dismissed both set batsmen.

When Charlie Douglas-Hughes (1) edged Will Blackwell (2-45) behind to give Rees his third catch, Halstead had fallen from 118-2 to 124-5.

Craig Spooner's (56) return to side proved a welcome one as he and Josh King (65) turned the innings back in the hosts' favour with a 94 run sixth wicket partnership.

Spooner put in a display of clean hitting to make it back-to-back centuries for the all-rounder, hitting eight boundaries including a reverse sweep for six before becoming Will Blackwell's second victim.

King was the fourth Halstead batsman to reach 50 - a feat that has not occurred since East Anglian Premier League days - but ended on 65 as he fell to the returning Cross.

For the second time in the innings Halstead lost two wickets without adding to the score, this time Chris Rayner (7) was bowled by George Blackwell and Halstead were soon stranded on 252-9 when Joe Morris (3) was bowled by Cross.

Sam Chapman (12*) and Ed Clark (8*) helped Halstead over the line to finish on 277-9 from their 50 overs.

Cross (23) opened the Coggeshall reply alongside Edward King (8), the latter the first wicket to fall when he hit Morris (2-44) to Huntington at mid-wicket.

The visitors paced their reply and were able to weather the storm of losing Cross and Oliver Blackwell (14) to Craig Spooner - the former caught behind and the latter stumped both by Sam Chapman.

George Hanham (44) was looking dangerous but became Josh King's (1-60) 23rd Division One wicket of the year and when Will Blackwell (3) was run out after a Wells direct hit the visitors found themselves in trouble at 128-5.

Jimmy Rees (46) and Charlie Green (73) scored at a run a ball in their 80-run stand, keeping Coggeshall in the chase as the run rate hovered at around seven an over.

Rees top-edged Huntington - Chapman taking a simple catch - and Addison (3) picked out Morris at deep mid-wicket off Wells to swing things back in Halstead's favour.

It would require something special to get Coggeshall over the line and skipper George Blackwell (30) so very nearly provided that.

Alongside Green - who had passed a very well constructed half-century - the pair took Coggeshall to within 14 runs of victory with three wickets in hand.

Blackwell hit his opposing skipper Wells for a huge six to reduce the tension, but was bowled with the final ball of the over by a full toss to give Halstead a reprieve.

Green could still win it for the visitors, but fell first ball of the penultimate over, Morris claiming his second wicket thanks to a stunning one-handed grab by wicket keeper Sam Chapman - his fourth dismissal in the game.

Craig Lesiak (1) was caught and bowled by Wells to wrap up proceedings with the first ball of the final over and brought a topsy-turvy game to a close as Halstead ran out 12 run victors.
