Halstead Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Braintree on Sun 05 Aug 2018 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Lost by 18 runs

Match report Halstead - 223 a.o. - lost to Braintree - 241-8 - by 18 runs

Joe Morris' NECL side slipped to their first defeat of the season, with a lackadaisical display in the field containing 10 dropped catches proving costly.

Morgan Whymark (2-41) had reduced Braintree to 6-2 after the visitors won the toss with Malcolm Fullgrabe (4) playing on and Will Perkins (0) caught by Charles Mallett at mid off.

Carl Lees (35) and Robbie Spalding (49) put on 73 for the third wicket before a stunning one-handed grab from Whymark accounted for Lees off the bowling of Josh King (4-26)

Spalding fell one short of his half-century when he hit King to Josh Ruthven at midwicket and Christopher Leach (42) was bowled by Sam Walter (2-67) soon after.

Albie Nutall (44) and Lee Fullgrabe (0) fell in consecutive balls to King - the former caught behind by Sam Hawes, the latter bowled - but the left-armer couldn't take what would have been a maiden career hat trick and five wicket haul.

Rory Ainsley (38) was out lbw to Walter with the last ball of the innings, leaving James Murphy (6*) not out and Braintree with 241-8 from their 40 overs.

Harry Pritchard (49) and Ruthven (55) got Halstead off to an excellent start, putting on 90 for the first wicket and setting a strong platform for the chase

Pritchard did not quite make his half-century - chipping Joel Ainsley (3-32) to Rory Ainsley at mid on, with Walter (1) following soon after, edging Rory Ainsley (3-47) to James Murphy at point.

Ruthven did pass 50 but was out in the same over as he was bowled by Joel Ainsley. It was soon four wickets in succession as Mallett (4) found himself bowled by Rory Ainsley.

The Ainsley's continued to share wickets, with Josh King (10) trapped lbw by Joel and Taylor Nicholson (1) caught behind by Lees off Rory as Halstead continued to capitulate.

Joe Morris played a captains innings, with Sam Hawes (11) and Callum Hansey (4) offering limited support, the pair both falling to Calley Foyster (3-64) in the same over.

Dave Hawes (3) and Morgan Whymark (10*) rotated the strike excellently as Morris tried to single-handedly wrest the game back in Halstead's favour, Hawes being bowled by Lee Fullgrabe (1-45).

Morris passed his 50 and it came down to 18 needed in two overs, but it was too little too late as Foyster dismissed Morris and the final unbeaten streak of the season was over.
