Halstead Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets

Match report Halstead - 169-9 - lost to Wivenhoe - 170-4 - by 6 wickets

Halstead fell to a second defeat of the season in their home opener against Wivenhoe. Josh Wells top-scored with 45 for the hosts, but an unbeaten 77 from Wivenhoe's South African pro Dirk Bruwer helped the visitors take the spoils.

The hosts lost both openers early to Joe Nicholls (3-31), Chris Rayner (1) caught by Liam Holyman and Mark Johnson (9) trapped lbw to leave Halstead 18-2 after being put in to bat.

Charlie Douglas-Hughes (6) added 27 for the third wicket alongside Wells but was out lbw to a ball that stayed low off the bowling of Bruwer (1-24).

Wells and Josh Ruthven (25) set about rebuilding an innings from the middle-order, putting together a 42-run stand, the skipper hitting 4 fours and 2 sixes on his way to a 70-ball 45 before becoming the third lbw victim of the day, plum in front to his Wivenhoe counterpart Harry Burnett (2-25).

Ruthven's watchful innings was ended by Burnett, caught by James Butcher, but Josh King (43) took the game to Wivenhoe and scored all the runs in a 21-run partnership with former Wivenhoe keeper Andrew Clark.

Ryan Savill (3-34) bowled Clark (0) and had Aaron Read (1) caught by Burnett, but King continued to score well and was backed by Adam Morris (20*) as they added 29 for the eighth wicket.

King hit a return catch to Savill to give the latter his third wicket and Liam Jones (0) was bowled by Joe Nicholls, but Morris and Lewis Brennan (5*) saw Halstead through to 169-9 from their 50 overs.

Halstead needed a quick start if they were to defend their below-par total which they got in the form of an excellent catch from Liam Jones. Matt Durrell (16) miscued an Aaron Read (1-31) delivery toward cover, with Jones brilliantly covering the ground and pulling off a diving catch to his left.

Jordan Nicholls (13) soon followed as Lewis Brennan (2-39) picked up his third wicket of the season, the Wivenhoe keeper edging behind to Clark to leave the visitors at 45-2.

Tom Durrell (27) was joined by Dirk Bruwer (77*) and the pair put together a partnership that would set-up the win for the visitors.

Bruwer offered an early chance off Brennan but the catch went down. After a 54-run stand, Durrell departed to Jones (1-18), caught by Wells, but Bruwer soon passed his half-century, hitting 11 fours on his way to a 68-ball unbeaten 77.

James Butcher (14) became the second wicket for Brennan, caught behind again by Clark, but skipper Burnett (9*) and Bruwer saw the visitors to victory with 10 overs to spare.
