Wickham St Paul v Halstead Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Sun 26 May 2019 at 13:30
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets

Match report Halstead - 164-8 - beat Wickham St Pauls - 162-8 - by 2 wickets

Halstead ran out two wicket winners in a nail-biting first game of the Tom Sewell Memorial Trophy series at Wickham St Pauls on Sunday.

The match went down to the final delivery, with three needed for victory skipper Josh King sent the ball for four to take the spoils.

Wickham won the toss and batted first, Lewis Brennan (0-17) and Callum Hansey (1-26) bowling tight opening spells, the latter dismissing Mark Waithman (5) lbw.

Joe Morris (5-19) was the pick of the Halstead bowlers, taking five wickets across two spells, bowling Ian Saville (7), Michael Turner (1), Harry Pritchard (49) and Alex Rippingale (18) whilst Sam Walter took a sharp catch behind the stumps to dismiss Al MacDiarmid (6).

Pritchard was the pick of the Halstead batsmen, finding support from Ronnie Smith (22) and Rippingale in the middle overs, but Smith was stumped by Walter off Sam Hume (1-24).

George Pritchard (18*) added late order runs, first with Harrison Smith (9) before the latter was run out by Adam Morris, and then with Julian Chamberlain-Carter (3*) to help the hosts to 162-8 from their rain effected 40 overs.

Halstead started slowly on a tough wicket as early spells from George Pritchard (2-18), Al MacDiarmid (1-15) and John Fazakerley (3-23) put the pressure on the visiting batsmen.

Sam Walter (17) and Adam Morris (12) saw off some of the opening challenges but were trapped lbw by MacDiarmid and bowled by Fazakerley respectively.

Charles Mallett (50) made his first senior half-century, the 50 coming off just 46 balls and including two towering sixes back over the bowlers' heads.

A flurry of wickets - Morgan Whymark caught by Rippingale off Chamberlain-Carter (1-42), Brennan caught by Chamberlain-Carter off Fazakerley and Mallett lbw to Fazakerley - left Halstead at 91-5 and a long way from victory.

Dave Brooker (24) and Callum Hansey (31) got the visitors back into the game with a vital 44 run stand for the 6th wicket, gradually reducing the equation to a run a ball.

George Pritchard returned to the attack to dismiss both Brooker and Joe Morris (6), but Halstead went into the final Harrison Smith (1-28) over needing five for victory with Hansey and Josh King (7*) at the crease.

Smith restricted the visitors to two from the first four balls before Hansey chipped one to Pritchard at mid-on, leaving King on strike for the final ball, which he duly sent over mid-wicket for 4 and the victory.
