Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Mistley on Sat 14 Jul 2018 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 83 runs
Match report
Halstead - 275-7 - beat Mistley - 192 all out - by 83 runs
Halstead survived a big scare to eventually run out comfortable winners against Mistley at Star Stile.
The hosts had fallen to 68-4, but Charlie Douglas-Hughes (89*) shared vital partnerships with Craig Spooner (62) and Joe Morris (46*) to hoist the hosts to an imposing 275-7.
Paul Garwood (2-31) and James Scott (2-30) did the early damage to the Halstead top-order, with Harry Pritchard (5) the first to go, offering a simple return catch to Garwood.
Chris Huntington (42) had dominated the scoring such that the first wicket fell on 41, but both Josh Ruthven (2) and Josh Wells (0) fell in successive deliveries to Scott as Halstead were reduced to 44-3.
A minor recovery occurred in the form of a 24 run stand between Huntington and Douglas-Hughes, but when the former was stumped by Sizwe Masondo for a near run-a-ball 4 Mistley were firmly in the driving seat.
Craig Spooner joined Douglas-Hughes at the crease and the pair built what turned out to be a match-defining partnership, Spooner being the main aggressor, hitting 7 fours and 3 sixes as part of a 98 run partnership.
Spooner scored his first half-century since joining Halstead over the winter, the all-rounder ending on 62 from just 50 balls when he picked out Daniel Goff at deep midwicket off Matthew Bibby .
Josh King (10) rotated the strike but fell to Bibby (2-32) with Goff again taking the catch, this time at cover.
When Sam Chapman (0) fell first ball to Jimmy Goff (1-45), Halstead were at 203-7, though Douglas-Hughes had passed his half-century.
Joe Morris joined the former skipper at the crease and the pair added 72 vital runs in 10 overs, Douglas-Hughes finishing on 89 and Morris on 46 to elevate the score to 275-7.
Daniel Goff (6) fell early on in Mistley's reply courtesy of a fine slip catch from Wells off the bowling of Morris (3-18), however Graeme Butcher (14) and James Scott (31) moved the scores past 50.
The pair fell in the space of seven runs both to Wells (3-24), Scott courtesy of an excellent catch from Pritchard at deep square leg and Butcher bowled.
Sizwe Masondo (72) rotated the strike excellently for his first 40 runs as Halstead struggled to prevent him scoring freely, adding 52 with Adrian Stockton (11) and 37 with Tim Scott (13).
Stockton was trapped lbw by Josh King (2-39) and Scott fell in the same fashion to Huntington (2-22), but it was the wicket of Masondo that ultimately won the game for Halstead, the South African adjudged lbw to Huntington.
At this point, the visitors needed nearly 10 an over, the asking rate proving too much for the Mistley lower order as Joe Morris and Josh Wells returned to clean up the tail and secure an 83 run victory, something that looked hugely unlikely earlier in the day.
