Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Kelvedon and Feering CC 1st XI on Sat 22 Apr 2023 at 12:00
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 161 runs
Match report
Halstead - 341-9 - beat Kelvedon & Feering - 180-7 - by 161 runs
A Max Chu masterclass helped Halstead kick off their 2023 Two Counties Division One title defence in style, with a 161-run victory over promoted Kelvedon on Saturday.
Chu scored 164 from just 122 balls, including 14 fours and 7 sixes, to pick up where he left off from a 2022 season that saw 1,271 runs at a little under an average of 100.
Kelvedon won the toss and fielded first at a very damp Star Stile, with Alex Holder (1-49) getting an early breakthrough when he bowled Chris Rayner (0). Chu and Harry Pritchard (18) put on 56 for the second wicket, with Pritchard the next to fall, one of three wickets for Tristan Peperell (3-49).
Josh Wells (9) and Josh King (15) had played the supporting role as Chu continued to accumulate, reaching his century amidst a 73-run stand with King for the fourth wicket.
From here on Halstead pushed the accelerator, with Craig Spooner (37 off 25), Ed Clark (45 off 30) and Joe Morris (28 off 25) all scoring at better than a run-a-ball for the hosts as they amassed 341 from their 50 overs. Josh Parsons (4-52) claiming late wickets as both Clark and Chu were caught on the boundary, to finish as Kelvedon's most productive bowler.
It was slow going in reply for Kelvedon as the visitors were never really up with the rate, Alfie Long (11) and Tom Potter (34) putting on 41 for the first wicket. The halfway stage saw Kelvedon at 82-2 and they added a further 100 runs as the innings went on.
Josh King (2-25), Sam Walter (2-29) and Joe Morris (2-36) all picked up a brace of wickets apiece as no one bettered Potter's 34 for Kelvedon.
