Witham v Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 25 May 2019 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
Halstead - 223-6 - beat Witham - 222-7 - by 4 wickets
Halstead bounced back from their agonising defeat to Lakenheath last week with a spirited victory over a strong Witham side on Saturday.
The visitors recovered from 68-4 to win by 4 wickets after an unbeaten Michael Godwin century set a target of 223 for victory.
Witham won the toss and elected to bat, with skipper Jake Wakelin hitting three boundaries early on before becoming the first wicket to fall when he edged behind to Gary Dicker off Joe Morris (3-45).
Michael Godwin was joined by Witham's overseas pro, New Zealander Ken McClure, and the pair moved the score on to 50 inside 14 overs with McClure (18) hitting three boundaries before drilling a Shorn Bobb (1-21) delivery into the hands of Liam Jones, who held on to a tough chance at cover.
Godwin found support in the form of James Smith (23) and the pair added 63 for the third wicket, taking Witham to three figures before the introduction of Lewis Brennan (2-23) shifted the momentum back to the visitors.
Brennan first bowled Smith before James Suett (0) top edged to give Josh Wells a catch and reduce Witham to 126-4.
Godwin passed his half-century off 95 balls alongside Jack Pawsey (14), though the summer acquisition was soon out, Liam Jones again taking a catch at cover, this time off Sam Walter (1-42).
Ollie Cooke (24) joined Godwin and put together a 59-run partnership for the sixth wicket, Godwin moving toward three figures whilst Cooke hit a six and two fours before Morris returned to the attack to have him caught by Wells.
Kaan Hawes (4) looped a chance to Charlie Latham at mid-on but there was time for Godwin to reach a well-deserved century, carrying his bat and bringing up three figures off the final ball of the innings, setting Halstead 223 for victory.
Harry Pritchard (21) made his long-awaited return from a broken thumb to open the batting with Charlie Latham (9), adding 27 for the opening wicket when Latham edged Billy Moulton-Day (2-39) behind to Kaan Hawes.
An ill-judged call for a single to point left Liam Jones (0) high and dry without scoring as Halstead lost two wickets for the addition of no runs.
Pritchard was joined by skipper Josh Wells and moved the score on to 42 but the former was trapped lbw by a Greg Stephens (2-47) quicker ball.
Josh King (6) joined Wells at the crease and was watchful as Wells dominated the scoring in their 26-run partnership until King hit a return catch to Ken McClure (1-38), leaving Halstead in the doldrums at 68-4.
Joe Morris (33) and Wells rebuilt in what would be a match-defining 87-run partnership, the pair digging in as Halstead slowly but surely reduced the arrears.
Wells passed his half-century in the 35th over, but when Morris edged Moulton-Day behind to Hawes in the 39th over there was still a long way to go, with 68 required in 11 overs.
Shorn Bobb (42*) took on the mantle and took the game to the Witham attack, taking a liking to Wakelin, hitting the Witham skipper for three huge sixes to put Halstead in the box seat.
There was to be no century for Wells as he too fell victim to a Stephens quicker ball, falling for 95 with just six required for victory, but the damage was already done and Bobb and Adam Morris (2*) saw Halstead home to an excellent four-wicket win.
