From the Chairman – Robert Chapman

The 2025 season has got off to a bright start both on and off the field. Ryan, in his column, develops on the cricketing activities.
The ground has been freshened up by the arrival of not only the Firmin Gates but several new sponsor boards headed by Hume Homes. We are so grateful to all our sponsors old and new and look forward to seeing you at Star Stile over the summer.
At the end of May we had our first event of the year – a band in the marquee and a barbecue. Blessed with great weather, it was a roaring success with large numbers of people who’d never been to the ground before. The bar was virtually drunk dry!
On Friday 13 June (hope it’s not an omen), the barbecue will once again be lit from about 5:30pm and the bar open. Then on Friday 11 July, we will be repeating the formula – hopefully with music in the marquee. Details will be confirmed nearer the time.
The Beer Festival goes from strength to strength and has been extended from 20–25 August to tie in with a series of matches headlined by the MCC v Gents of Essex on the 22nd. There should be several familiar Halstead faces appearing for both sides. There will again be a band in the marquee on both Friday and Saturday evening.
Barrels are available for sponsorship at £100. Anyone kind enough to do so, please contact Adam Morris.
A final note for the diary is Saturday 11 October – the Annual Dinner and Awards at Gosfield Lake Golf Club. Booking forms will follow in due course.
This club would not function without the amazing volunteers who put in endless hours maintaining the ground, preparing pitches, and keeping the bar stocked – amongst many other jobs. We always need more help, especially a scorer for the First XI. If you feel you can help in any way, please contact one of the committee.
Enjoy the summer and we look forward to welcoming you to Star Stile.
From the First XI Captain – Ryan Vickery

The First XI has kicked off the season in fine form: four wins, one loss, and one dramatic draw from their opening six fixtures. With momentum building and several players already delivering standout performances, there’s plenty of optimism around the squad as they head into the heart of the season.
Wins have come against Mildenhall, Braintree, Worlington, East Bergholt, and Woolpit – showcasing the side’s ability to perform both at home and away. The team showed their resilience with a thrilling last-ball draw against Coggeshall, in a match that swung both ways and kept spectators on the edge of their seats.
Several individual performances have caught the eye. Against East Bergholt, Walter Forsey (103) and Callum O’Connell (131) delivered superb centuries in a dominant batting display.

On the bowling front, Ed Clark recorded a devastating spell: 10–1–30–7 against Braintree, dismantling the opposition and sealing a comfortable win.
The 2nd and 3rd XIs have also started well. The 2nd XI are currently top of the table after a solid few weeks in their new division. The 3rd XI has benefited from strong performances from our Junior section, giving younger players a chance to step into adult cricket.
With a strong foundation and high confidence, the teams are aiming to maintain form and continue climbing the tables in the coming weeks.
