Coggeshall v Halstead Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Sun 28 Apr 2013 at 13.00
Halstead Cricket Club Lost by 7 runs

Match report Coggeshall made 209-8 from their 40 overs thanks largely to a century from Barry Edwards (106), and for Halstead Freddy Preston ( 3037) was the pick of the bowlers although spinners Digby Harding ( 2-28) ,Mark Surridge ( 2-41) and sam walter ( 1-20) all bowled well. Halstead lost Goushi Ravinedran (7) and Freddy Preston ( 14) early on but a partnership of 97 between Surridge (106) and Harding ( 33) brought Halstead within striking distance but the Coggeshall bowlers held their nerve and despite a brave final flurry with Freddy Staham( 16) looking impressive, the visitors failed by just 7 runs.

Mark Surridge, Halstead Chairman and Sunday Captain, scored his first century for the Club since he joined back in 1982. 'It's been a long wait and long overdue, ' he said, ' but when you have spent your time batting after prolific run scorers like Neale Dakin, John Clinch, Paul Harris, Darren Robinson, and Phil Toogood you've spent a lot of time with your pads on waiting your turn.'

Surridge hit thirteen fours and three sixes in his first century for twenty years, as Halstead just failed to bring off a surprise victory over Coggesahall reaching 202-6 chasing down Coggeshall's 210- 7. ' I think my last ton was for the Gents of Essex against Dunmow , back in 1992, but it's so long ago I cannot remember exactly, I just know that Ray East was playing as Keith Fletcher wanted him to get in some practice for Essex as they began their title run in'

Surridge who has played for both Essex Over 50s and now the Over 60s was picked to play for England Over 60s last summer against Australia but had to pull out through injury, hopes the opportunity will come round again. 'As all sportsmen of my age , not to mention football managers say, I shall simply take each game as it comes and just be grateful that I am still playing.'
