Maldon v Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 15 Sep 2018 at 12.00
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
Halstead - 171-4 beat Maldon - 169 all out - by 6 wickets
Halstead closed their season with a six wicket victory at Drapers against Maldon, the visitors finishing their 2018 campaign in Third in Division One of the Two Counties Championship.
Halstead won the toss and put Maldon in to bat, with the mercurial Rob Harris (1-25) returning to the side to open the bowling alongside Josh Wells (2-42).
The early breakthrough came from Harris, bowling his namesake - Maldon skipper Chris Harris (2) - with an excellent ball that found the gap between bat and pad.
Max Bryant (21) targeted the leg-side as he and Ross Walpole (23) looked to get on top of the Halstead bowlers, but Harris kept them guessing, plying away at a tricky line and length, whilst some stellar fielding kept runs at a premium.
Craig Spooner (2-32) joined the attack, replacing Wells who had bowled dwell without reward, the change paying immediate dividends as the left-armer bowled Bryant.
Jimmy Ainscough (47) joined Walpole at the crease and the pair put on 52 for the third wicket, taking the partnership towards the drinks break.
Ainscough overtook his partner, moving into the 30s before Walpole miscued a drive off Chris Huntington (1-24) to be caught at mid off by Liam Jones.
Matt Wild (43) was watchful in the early part of his innings, allowing Ainscough to take the strike and approach a half-century.
Maldon brought up the three figures, but with Ainscough three short of his 50, he cut Josh King (2-12) straight to, Spooner at point.
Matt Anderson fell in the same over - bowled by King - to leave Maldon at 108-5, having previously been 90-2.
Liam Jones (2-20) took up the mantle from Huntington and was soon rewarded, Matthew Coppen (0) caught down leg-side by wicket keeper Andrew Clark and Gary Bannister (0) trying to hit over the top but only finding King at mid off.
Ian Elliot (8) - batting down the order due to injury - and Mark Foster (4) both fell to Wells as the captain came back to prevent the tail wagging, but a 22-run tenth wicket stand frustrated Halstead, until Spooner finish things off, bowling Wild for 43.
Halstead's reply started with a maiden, but that would be the only respite the hosts would get as the visitors quickly raced to 77-0 inside eight overs, Chris Huntington surviving being caught off a no ball.
Craig Spooner (63) conducted most of the damage, a display of remarkable clean-hitting saw the makeshift opener to a 24-ball 50, the milestone coming up with a pugnacious driver over cover.
Spooner has put Halstead very much on the front foot by taking the game to Maldon, so when he was eventually dismissed - caught at long off by Walpole off Harris for 63 - Halstead were 91-1 after 10 overs.
Huntington had been made to look sedate in comparison, but continued to score at more than a run-a-ball, despite Josh Ruthven (1) falling to Chris Harris (3-44).
Josh Wells (12) rotated the strike, allowing Huntington to pass a deserved 50, but the former would hit Toby Pugh (1-37) straight at Anderson at cover to depart.
Matt Cooper (5) was adjudged lbw to Chris Harris, but the early damage had been done and it was too little too late for Maldon as Huntington and Josh King (6*) saw Halstead home to an impressive, clinical 20 point victory.
