Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Hadleigh on Sat 05 May 2018 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets

Match report Halstead 1st XI – 241-6 beat Hadleigh 1st XI – 237-6 – by 4 wickets

Josh Wells’ unbeaten century helped his side to their first win of the 2018 Two Counties Division One campaign.

Callum Morrin (61) and Alex Milnes (24) put on 84 for the first wicket, despite the former surviving an early dropped catch before he got going.

Milnes was the man to go, bowled by Wells, though Morrin found support in Marlon Dias (46) and the pair took the score past 100 as Morrin completed his half-century.

The wicket-keeper batsmen had made 61 before he became Craig Spooner’s first Halstead wicket, the skipper Wells taking the catch,

Josh Davey (28) added 49 for the third-wicket alongside Dias, scoring at nearly a run a ball prior to falling to Ed Clark.

Another 40 run stand ensured between Dias and Thomas Piddington (33) to take the visitors past the 200 mark.

The return of Andy Charlton (8-0-26-0) after a four year absence had stemmed the flow of runs – his first 7 overs going for just 11 runs – and Dias and Hadleigh skipper Ben Wallis (2) fell in quick succession to Joe Morris and Wells respectively.

Morris picked up the wicket of Piddington as Kyle Tanner (17*) and Daniel Shanks (2*) took Hadleigh to 237-6 from their 50 overs.

Tanner took the two quick wickets of Graham Wickes (14) and Chris Huntington (15) as the Halstead chase got off to a poor start.

Mark Johnson (25) and Wells began a rebuild, though runs were at a premium against a miserly Hadleigh attack.

Johnson snicked a Ben Wallis delivery behind to Morrin, with Charlie Douglas-Hughes (10) falling to the same bowler with Halstead still over 130 runs behind their target.

Chris Rayner (5) and Craig Spooner (14) were dismissed by Kieran Cloud and Cameron Stace, but by this point Wells had passed his half-century.

Sam Chapman (31*) joined his captain as the run-rate approached 8 an over, though the acceleration of Wells’ inning was timed to perfection.

The pair’s unbroken 82 run stand saw Wells to his first century of the year, finishing on 115 not out to see Halstead to victory with 4 overs to spare.
