Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Elmstead on Sat 19 May 2018 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets

Match report Halstead 1st XI – 103-1 – beat Elmstead 1st XI – 100 all out – by 9 wickets

After the disappointment of rain preventing victory at Coggeshall last weekend, the first eleven put last season’s Division One Champions, Elmstead, to the sword at Star Stile with a resounding 9 wicket victory.

The visitors had beaten Halstead in both encounters on their way to the Division One title in 2017 and elected to bat first after winning the toss.

In perfect batting weather, the new ball was shared by Joe Morris and Ed Clark, as the hosts raced to 16-0 in the first two overs.

The tide very quickly turned as a ferocious opening spell from Clark soon got rewards. First he took a reaction caught and bowled to dismiss Elliot Mann (0) before having Elmstead skipper Aidan O’Brien (0) caught in the slip cordon by Josh Wells.

Elmstead’s star man Ryan Vickery had scored 117 and 83* in the meetings between the sides last year, but didn’t trouble the scorers this time round, Clark taking his middle stump to leave the visitors reeling at 19-3.

Jordan Elliott (41) stood firm and the scores had passed 40 before a run was scored off a bat other than Elliott’s as he and Dan White (10) added 35 for the fourth wicket before the former was trapped LBW by Josh King.

White was then caught behind by Chris Rayner without adding to the score to give Clark his fourth scalp.

Wells then introduced himself to the attack and proceeded to take the final five wickets in an excellent spell of 8.5-5-10-5 – his maiden five-wicket haul for the 1st XI, beating his previous best of 4-22.

Jon Butcher (10) and Craig Watts (18) offered the most resistance in the Elmstead lower order, but catches from Charlie Douglas-Hughes and Sam Chapman accounted for them.

Elmstead’s total of 100 was well below par and Chris Huntington made very light work of the chase, his 81 not out came in 61 balls and included 12 fours and a six.

Chris Rayner made a watchful 15 but was bowled by Elliott, leaving Sam Chapman (5*) to join Huntington to see the hosts home inside 21 overs.

The victory leaves Wells’ side in third place in Division One, behind early pacesetters Witham and in a group of five teams separated by just three points.
