Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Maldon on Sat 30 Jun 2018 at 12:00
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
HCC - 246-8 - beat MCC - 242-5 - by 2 wickets
Halstead bounced-back from defeat at Worlington, beating visitors Maldon to end the first half of the season in third place in Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship Division One.
Josh Wells lost the toss and his side were put in the field under the midday sun at Star Stile.
Opposing skipper Chris Harris - who plays football for Halstead Town in the winter - and fellow opener Max Bryant punished anything off line as a lightning quick outfield and flat wicket presented a batsman's paradise.
The pair passed the 50 and 100 run partnership marks scoring equally, with Bryant passing his half-century marginally ahead of Harris.
The stand was worth 131 when a much needed breakthrough was found by left-arm spinner Josh King (2-42).
Harris was the man to go, trapped lbw having made 59 from 80 deliveries after being dropped early on.
Matt Wild (5) was bowled by the same bowler, giving King his 16th Division One wicket of the campaign.
Bryant continued a measured innings until he edged behind off off-spinner Sam Walter (2-38) to Sam Chapman, 19 runs short of a century.
Walter also dismissed the dangerous Ian Elliott (30) courtesy of a well-held catch from skipper Wells.
Matt Anderson (31*) and first Jimmy Ainscough (17) then Reece Bawden (7) added 57 runs in the final overs - Wells bowling Ainscough in between - as Maldon posted 242-5 from their allotted 50 overs.
Chris Huntington hit eight fours at the top of the Halstead reply as the hosts started quickly, the left-hander however hit a Matt Wild (1-32) delivery to Toby Pugh at gully to depart for 36 with the scores on 48.
Josh Ruthven (26) joined Mark Johnson at the crease and the two put on 58 for the second wicket prior to Ruthven being caught and bowled by Michael Foster (1-25).
Josh Wells soon followed as he set off for a run to mid off, the ball bouncing kindly for Matt Anderson who promptly threw down the stumps to dismiss the skipper without scoring.
Johnson and Charlie Douglas-Hughes added 31 for the fourth wicket, with the former reaching his 50 on return to the first eleven,
He would not add more to his score however as he fell for 51 to Connor Pateman (1-14) thanks to a catch from Wild at mid-wicket.
Douglas-Hughes was next to go as he was run out by a Max Bryant throw from deep cover as he attempted to return for a second run.
Sam Chapman (8) played around an Anderson delivery to be out leg before as Halstead fell behind the rate with wickets tumbling.
Craig Spooner backed up a miserly 0-27 from 10 overs with a quickfire 21, but he too was out lbw, this time to Ian Elliot (2-54).
Joe Morris joined Josh King at the crease and the pair put together a vital 32-run stand for the eighth wicket against the bowling of Anderson and Elliott.
Elliot got his second wicket, Morris (5) caught by his Halstead Town FC teammate Chris Harris, with 25 still required when Ed Clark (6*) came to the crease.
By now King had moved on to 29 and his calm demeanour proved integral as Halstead needed 2 to win from the final over.
There was to be no repeat of the mayhem of the one-wicket win at Wivenhoe three weeks prior, with King hitting the second ball of the 50th over for four to bring up a well-deserved maiden half-century for the club and an excellent two wicket win,
