Elmstead v Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 04 Aug 2018 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Lost by 29 runs
Match report
HCC - 182 a.o. — lost to Elmstead - 211-9 — by 29 runs
Halstead's five game unbeaten run came to an end at bottom-placed Elmstead on Saturday.
The 29 run defeat meant Josh Wells' side lost ground on first placed Worlington, but remain second in the Division One table.
Proceedings began at Vicarage Meadow with a minutes silence in respect of Stuart Burle, who's son Michael now plays for ELmstead having previously been at Halstead.
Elmstead won the toss and batted first on what would prove to be a tough pitch to score on as the game progressed.
Jordan Elliott and skipper Aidan O'Brien were the openers, moving on to 24 inside 5 overs before O'Brien (9) fell to Ed Clark (1-34) courtesy of a Wells catch.
Elliott was joined by Michael Cursons (24) and the pair added 46 for the second wicket in just seven overs until Elliot's better than a run a ball knock came to an end at the hands of Joe Morris (1-32).
Cursons was bowled two overs later by Josh King (1-38) and at 84-3 the game was still firmly in the balance.
Ryan Vickery (40) and Elliott Mann (42) built a vital 65-run stand for the fourth wicket, with Halstead's change bowlers struggling for success in the middle overs.
The stand was broken when Chris Rayner (4-32) trapped Vickery lbw for the first of four wickets, with Craig Watts (3) being caught and bowled by Rayner 12 runs later.
The dangerous Mann's dismissal — bowled by Chris Huntington (1-29) — sparked a run of three wickets for nine runs as Paul Gates (1) was run out by Craig Spooner and Peter Webster (2) was stumped by Sam Chapman off Rayner.
Jon Butcher (19) was Rayner's final victim — caught by Spooner - before Ian Evans (11*) and Michael Burle (5*) added an unbroken 14 for the last wicket to finish on 211-9.
Halstead's reply got off to the worst possible start as inside eight overs they had lost their three highest run scorers of the season.
Neale Dakin (1) has 581 runs this year, but only one of those came on Saturday as he was the first man to go, caught and bowled by O'Brien (3-21).
Chris Huntington (11) leads the charts with 698 runs but was caught behind off O'Brien by Mann and when Josh Wells (1) toe ended the same bowler to Webster, Halstead were in disarray.
Josh Ruthven (41) and Charlie Douglas-Hughes (26) rebuilt in a 55-run fourth wicket partnership, but run scoring was at a premium by now.
Douglas-Hughes was trapped lbw by Gates (1-35) and it was soon 99-5 when Ruthven was caught and bowled by Webster (3-35).
Craig Spooner (27) and Josh King (25) both got starts as they tried to up the run rate, but were the second and third victims of Webster, lbw and bowled respectively as Halstead moved on to 151-7 with 7 overs to go.
Needing over 8.5 an over for the final push was always going to be a tall ask, despite Rayner's battling 30 as Morris (5) was run out by Elliott and Chapman (8) fell to Vickery.
With 13 balls to go it proved too much to ask, Rayner was run out after miscommunication with Clark (1*) and Halstead were beaten.
