Halstead Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Witham on Sun 01 Jul 2018 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 79 runs
Match report
Halstead - 305-4 - beat Witham - 226 all out - by 79 runs
Maiden Halstead centuries for Josh King and Joe Morris kept up the NECL XI's 100% record in Division Two with a big win over Witham on Sunday.
Winning the toss was a must on a baking day at Star Stile, Joe Morris unsurprisingly electing to bat first.
Goush Raviendran (52) scored freely early on, first taking advantage of the short leg-side boundary before putting the ball frequently through the off-side as he raced to a half century of 53 balls.
Taylor Nicholson (6) knicked Luke Brown (1-9) to Forster Mutizwa at slip and Raviendran was stumped by Ollie Cooke of Jack Sambrook as Halstead fell to 68-2.
Adam Morris (9) then holed out to Michael Headley at deep-square leg of Sambrook to leave the hosts on 77-3 with Joe Morris and Josh King at the crease.
Morris was the early aggressor of the two, as the pair rotated strike well on their way to a 50-run stand at the drinks break.
King continued his fin ball striking from the day before, finding the leg-side boundary off the bowling of Michael Godwin.
Sambrook was the pick of the Witham bowlers, only going at 3.5 an over as he bowled his full allocation of 9 overs.
Morris took a liking to the off-spin of Mutizwa - the Zimbabwean eventually going for 75 from 8 overs - as he reached his fifty before swiftly going through the gears, taking 12 runs apiece of consecutive overs.
The skipper passed his highest senior score for the club - an 84 in the same competition last year - before bringing up his first senior century with an edge through the slips.
He tried one shot too many to the pond on the short boundary, eventually being dismissed for 110 from 81 deliveries, having hit 18 fours and 2 sixes.
Mutizwa took the wicket to break a 175 run partnership and Sam Hawes (6*) joined King - who had just brought up his second fifty of the weekend - with the scores at 252-4 with under 5 overs to go.
King proceeded to target the short-boundary as he raced through to his first century for Halstead, ending with a six over cover to close the innings at 305-4, King having made 112 from 67 balls with 13 fours and 4 sixes.
Witham needed 7.5 an over from the off and were soon above the rate as Michael Headley (25) and Michael Godwin scored quickly off Sam Johnson (2+37) and Morgan Whymark (0-36).
Centurion Morris introduced himself to the attack, taking the wicket of Headley in his first over as the Witham opener edged through to Sam Hawes after a better than run-a-ball 25.
The dangerous Forster Mutizwa joined Godwin at the crease, hitting three fours off Sam Walter with Witham continuing to exceed the required rate.
A Walter arm ball trapped the sweeping Mutizwa lbw for 13 in what proved to be a pivotal point in the match.
Michael Godwin continued to score well but struggled for support as numbers four through to nine all failed to reach double figures.
Joe Morris (2-14) had Joe Allen (5) caught by a diving Hawes, with Josh King (1-22) bowling Will Wakeman (8).
Callum Hansey (2-27) took the wickets of Max Allen (2) and Scott Pringle (0) in his first over and Charles Mallett (1-31) bowled Alan Brown (7) as Witham reached 154-8.
Jack Sambrook (39*) played the foil to Godwin as the opener got through to a well-deserved century with a four through point.
Sam Johnson returned to the attack, bowling Godwin for 108, having hit 15 fours and a six in his 111 ball innings, and having Ollie Cooke (3) caught at deep midwicket by Charles Mallett to give Halstead a 79 run victory.
They now face two weeks without a fixture, with their 100% record intact.
