Woolpit v Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 20 Apr 2019 at 12:30
Halstead Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
Halstead I - 198-4 - lost to Woolpit - 199-5 - by 5 wickets
Halstead's first match in Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Division One ended in a 5 wicket defeat at the hands of Woolpit.
Charlie Douglas-Hughes (83*) and Josh Wells (45) had earlier helped Halstead to 198-4 from their 50 overs, but an unbeaten hundred from Andy Northcote (102*) was enough to see Woolpit chase down their target.
Halstead won the toss and elected to bat first, Chris Rayner (20) and Josh Ruthven (4) were the opening pair for the visitors, the latter becoming the first wicket when bowled by Alex Jackson (1-34).
Douglas-Hughes joined Rayner and the pair added 40 for the second wicket until Rayner was caught at slip by Will Parker off the bowling of Barry Collins (1-23).
Skipper Josh Wells and former captain Douglas-Hughes came together in the 16th over with the scores at 52-2 as the Woolpit bowlers turned the screw, keeping run-scoring to a premium.
Douglas-Hughes was batting well but continued to find fielders as Wells was the quicker scoring member of the partnership, the 50-run stand coming up off 78 balls in the 30th over.
Wells neared his half-century, but fell victim to namesake Chris Wells (1-31) five runs short of the milestone, ending a 73-run third wicket stand.
Douglas-Hughes passed 50 soon after, reaching his half-century off 93 deliveries alongside Mark Johnson (13), with the team 150 coming up soon after.
Johnson was the fourth Halstead wicket to fall, Tom Whiteman taking his second catch of the game, this time off Andy Northcote (1-37).
Josh King (18*) rotated the strike with Douglas-Hughes and the pair added an unbeaten 44 runs for the fifth wicket, helping Halstead to 198-4 from their 50 overs.
Halstead's defence of the 199 run target got off to a terrible start, with opening bowler Ed Clark pulling up in his delivery stride with what is now known to be a heavily sprained ankle, joining opening batsman Harry Pritchard in the injury room.
Woolpit skipper Will Parker (22) opened the batting alongside Northcote and the pair moved through a 50-run opening standing inside 12 overs against the bowling or Joe Morris and Josh Wells.
Left-arm spinner Josh King entered the attack and hardly had a shot in anger played against him, the Woolpit gameplan clearly to see out his overs.
Lewis Brennan (2-37) - drafted in late on Friday night due to illness - made his 1st XI debut and was soon in the action, encouraging Parker to edge behind to stand-in keeper Chris Rayner.
The visitors were suffering due to their man disadvantage, with Ryan Newcombe (11) edging Brennan through a vacant slip cordon that would ordinarily have been occupied.
The final ball of Brennan's first spell was drilled back at him by Newcombe, but the teenage bowler held on to a sharp return catch to leave Woolpit at 78-2.
Andy Northcote built a patient innings, passing his 50 from 92 deliveries, in a 47-run third wicket partnership with Tom Whiteman, before the latter was run out thanks to good work by Joe Morris.
A second run out, this time from Josh Ruthven, accounted for Oliver Melville Ross (15) as the equation worked out to 50 required from the final 9 overs, with Northcote the key to Woolpit's chase.
Sam Walter (0-48) bowled well without reward, Northcote employing various sweeps to keep the score ticking over, with a couple of boundaries putting the hosts in the drivers' seat.
Alex Jackson (14) edged Joe Morris to Josh Wells to fall to 173-5, with Northcote still unbeaten on 82 and 26 required for victory.
Karl Holmes (5) rotated the strike to afford Northcote the opportunity to win the game, something he took full advantage of, scoring 20 to take Woolpit to victory but also himself to fine unbeaten century, ending on 102* off 144 balls.
