Halstead Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets

Match report Halstead - 85-8 - beat Ipswich - 81 all out - by 2 wickets

Halstead got their first win of the fledgling Two Counties Division One season in a low-scoring affair against Ipswich at Star Stile.

The on-off nature of the weather meant for a disjointed game which may have contributed to 18 wickets falling for just 166 runs across the course of the match.

Halstead won the toss and put the visitors in to bat, Joe Rusby (0) and Rob Southall (0) opening for Ipswich. With three runs on the board - all of them extras - Josh Wells (4-10) had Southall caught at slip by Mark Johnson.

Joe Morris (1-9) got in on the act shortly afterwards as Rusby picked out Sam Walter at midwicket to leave Ipswich at 9-2.

Runs were at a premium as Wells and Morris continued to bowl tight lines, the pair going for a combined 19 runs from their 15 overs, with 8 maidens.

Nicholas Johnson (8) had played a watchful innings when he became the third wicket to fall, Walter taking his second catch at midwicket as Lewis Brennan (3-17) continued his fine start to life in the First Eleven.

Ipswich skipper Damien Smith (1) was the next to fall, Josh King (1-12) having him caught by Adam Morris at mid-on.

Brennan took two in two balls to take his season tally to seven - Mark Phillips (1) was caught by Josh Ruthven, again at midwicket, and Nigel Parmenter clean bowled - to leave the visitors reeling at 26-6.

Wicketkeeper Mark Burch (51) offered some stout resistance for the Ipswich side, finding able support in Jamie De Cosimo (13) to drag the visitors out of the mire.

Burch hit eight fours in a 74-ball half century, putting on a 7th wicket partnership of 55 with De Cosimo, moving on to 81-6.

Ipswich would not add to their total as they lost their last four wickets without troubling the scoreboard, Wells returning to the attack to have Burch caught behind by Gary Dicker before bowling Ismail Mohammed (0) and trapping Masood Syed lbw first ball to return figures of 4-10.

Liam Jones (1-15) completed the rout as De Cosimo was stumped by Dicker and Ipswich were all out for 81 inside 32 overs.

Halstead's chase got off to a terrible start as they lost both openers - Joe Morris (0) and Mark Johnson (4) - in quick succession.

Morris hit Southall (4-21) straight to Nicholas Johnson at point before Johnson hit the same bowler to Mark Phillips at midwicket and Halstead were 9-2.

Charlie Douglas-Hughes (8) was the next man to go as Southall picked up his third wicket, caught behind by Mark Burch to leave the hosts at 20-3.

Josh Wells (39) and Josh Ruthven (5) stopped the rot and added 29 for the fourth wicket before Ruthven became Southall's fourth victim, caught at slip by Damien Smith.

Josh King (4) fell in the same fashion as Ismail Mohammed (3-15) encouraged an edge to Smith at slip and when Adam Morris (1) was caught behind by Burch off the same bowler Halstead were 58-6.

Wells and Gary Dicker (4) added a further 13 runs as the hosts inched closer to their target, but the pair fell for the addition of two runs with Wells caught at midwicket by Phillips off Mohammed and Dicker trapped lbw by Phillips (1-7).

Overs were not an issue as the ninth wicket pair of Lewis Brennan (4*) and Liam Jones (10*) came together needing nine for victory. The youngsters getting Halstead over the line, Jones hitting a boundary when the scores were level to earn Halstead a laboured maximum 20 points from the game.
