Coggeshall v Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 08 Jun 2019 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets
Match report
Halstead - 161-8 - lost to Coggeshall - 162-2 - by 8 wickets
For the second time in two weeks an excellent century from an overseas pro was enough consign Halstead to defeat.
Coggeshall's Australian import - Adelaide Strikers and Victoria batsman Matthew Short - smashed a 60 ball 101 to lead the hosts to an 8-wicket triumph.
Halstead lost the toss and were put in to bat after a rain delay that meant the match was reduced to 40 overs per side.
Charlie Douglas-Hughes and Mark Johnson opened for Halstead but found the going tough as Robert cross (2-20) and Craig Lesiak (0-26) kept the batsmen in check.
Johnson (8) was the first to fall, departing in the ninth over after edging Cross behind to Jimmy Rees with the scores on 17.
Cross would not have to wait long for his second wicket as Douglas-Hughes' (20) defences were breached; bowled in the 15th over to leave Halstead at 39-2.
Harry Pritchard (13) rebuilt alongside skipper Josh Wells (64*) but the introduction of seamer Nick van Houtteghem (4-46) accounted for right-hander when he edged behind to give Rees a second catch of the game.
Liam Jones (6) supported Wells as the pair formed a 30-run fourth wicket stand, but the former's dismissal - bowled by van Houtteghem - sparked the fall of three wickets for the addition of just eight runs.
Craig Spooner (1) and Chris Rayner (2) were both caught at mid-on to give van Houtteghem his third and fourth wickets of the afternoon.
Shorn Bobb (26) added the impetus back into the Halstead innings, hitting a brace of fours and sixes in a breezy 20-ball 26, but picked out Robert Jagger at cover off George Blackwell (2-24).
Joe Morris (6) miscued a pull off the same bowler and Halstead found themselves at 136-8, despite the best efforts of Wells who brought up his third half-century of the season for the 1st XI, adding a further 25 for the eighth wicket alongside Matt Cooper (6*) as Halstead closed on an under par 161-8 from their 40 overs.
Coggeshall rarely looked in trouble in their response as Jagger (42) and Matthew Short (101) punished anything off line from the Halstead attack.
The pair built a formidable opening stand that proved pivotal in proceedings, scoring at a relatively similar rate as Short brought up his 50 the scores were 86-0, with Jagger on 36.
Short had the answers for all that the Halstead bowlers threw at him, scoring 74 of his 101 runs in boundaries, hitting eight fours and clearing the ropes seven times.
Jagger edged behind to Chris Rayner off Joe Morris (1-34) but Short soon brought up his maiden century for Coggeshall before edging behind to Rayner off Shorn Bobb (1-39).
The job was all but done at this point and Jimmy Rees (6*) and Charlie Green (0*) saw Coggeshall home to a comprehensive 8-wicket victory.
