Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Maldon on Sat 15 Jun 2019 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Lost by 34 runs
Match report
Halstead - 199 all out - lost to Maldon - 233-6 - by 34 runs
Halstead were left ruing a missed opportunity as they slipped to a third consecutive Two Counties Division One defeat at the hands of Maldon on Saturday.
Josh Wells (1-50) won the toss and put the visitors in to bat, a decision that paid immediate dividends as the skipper trapped Maldon number two Max Bryant (0) in front.
It was soon two as Joe Morris (2-52) dismissed Halstead Town FC teammate and Maldon danger-man Chris Harris (5) with a caught and bowled to reduce the Dons to 14-2.
Star Stile has previously been a happy hunting ground for Maldon man Ian Elliott (61) and he and Matt Wild (61) set about building what would prove to be a pivotal 114-run stand for the third wicket.
The pair saw off spells from Wells, Morris, Lewis Brennan (1-29) and Liam Jones (0-46), hitting 10 fours and a six between them as they made steady progress, both passing half-centuries as they carried Maldon into three figures.
The introduction of Sam Walter (2-49) finally broke the stand, sharp glove work from Gary Dicker - as has often been the case this season - accounting for Elliott, stumped for a well-made 61.
Matt Wild was next to go after he too made a well-constructed 61, hitting Walter to Josh Ruthven at long on to leave Maldon 145-5.
Lewis Brennan had bowled a tight spell and got his rewards when reintroduced to the attack, Gary Dicker taking the catch as Maldon keeper Jimmy Ainscough (14) knicked behind.
When Ross Walpole (2) top-edged Morris to Walter to make it 172-6 the Halstead tails were up, but Matt Anderson (40*) and Matthew Coppen (32*) steadied the ship and smashed 72 runs between them in just 53 balls to take Maldon past 200, finishing on 233-6 from their 50 overs.
Halstead needed a solid start to their chase if they were to break their losing streak, however this did not occur as Charlie Latham (5) looped a catch to Chris Harris at midwicket off Matt Anderson (2-34).
Harry Pritchard (19) added 30 with the returning Josh Ruthven (32) but picked out mid-off where Max Bryant lady took the catch to give Anderson his second scalp.
Ruthven was joined by the captain Wells (76) and played the supporting role in a 69-run third wicket stand that dragged Halstead well and truly back into the mix, Wells being the aggressor and passing his half-century in quick fashion.
Like Maldon in the first innings, the partnership would be broken by off-spin, Chris Harris (1-48) encouraging Ruthven to edge behind to keeper Ainscough.
Wells continued to punish the bad bowling - scoring 48 runs in boundaries as he plundered 9 fours and two sixes - in a 40-run partnership with Mark Johnson (12) but the former tried a shot too many and was caught at deep midwicket by Matt Wild off Toby Pugh (2-24).
There were still 15 overs remaining after Wells' dismissal for Halstead to score the 80 required for victory, but the pressure ramped up when Johnson hit a return catch to Ian Elliott (4-22) at the end of the next over.
Liam Jones (11) and Joe Morris (10) kept the runs coming as the required rate crept over 6, but the hosts were still firmly in contention even after Jones gave Pugh a return catch for his second wicket.
The dismissal of Joe Morris with the scores at 187 would be the beginning of the end for Halstead however as they lost their final four wickets for just twelve runs.
Morris was stumped by Ainscough off Elliott and Gary Dicker (16*) saw Matt Cooper (3), Lewis Brennan (5) and Sam Walter (0) all perish as Halstead fell short of their target and failed to make the extra bonus point of 200 runs.
Cooper edged Liam Renton (1-28) behind to Ainscough whilst Brennan gave Elliott the third caught and bowled of the innings and Sam Walter top edged a full toss to Chris Harris to allow Elliott to finish with figures of 4-22.
