Haverhill v Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 22 Jun 2019 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Lost by 63 runs

Match report Halstead - 140 all out - lost to Haverhill - 203-8 - by 63 runs

Halstead find themselves in the midst of a relegation battle as their fourth consecutive defeat, coupled with fellow strugglers Lakenheath's win over Hadleigh, sees them out of the relegation zone on Net Run Rate alone.

Were it not for a battling half-century from Joe Morris, the margin of defeat at Manor Road could have been a lot worse as the visitors fell 63 runs short of their target.

Haverhill batted first and lost opener James Boulton (7) in the fourth over, edging Morris (3-30) behind to Gary Dicker.

Summer signing Rajan Singh (35) and wicketkeeper Luke Youngs (39) added 63 for the second wicket as they accumulated runs steadily against a miserly Halstead attack - Lewis Brennan bowled 10 overs for 24, Josh King 10 overs for 18 - before Singh played all around a Liam Jones (1-52) delivery to be bowled.

Adam Dellar (8) struggled to get King away, eventually holing out to Joe Morris on the midwicket boundary to leave the hosts at 99-3.

Luke Youngs soon followed as he edged Josh Wells (1-40) behind to give Dicker his second catch of the game and thirteenth 1st XI dismissal of the season, Wells having reverted to bowling spin after picking up a back injury in his first spell.

Samuel Charlton (39) and Anthony Phillips (40) marshalled Haverhill out of a tricky position, scoring 75 runs between them in a partnership that lasted 13 overs that was eventually broken by Chris Rayner (2-27), bowling both Haverhill men.

Dan Pass (6) and Will Bailey (5) were both dismissed by Morris - the former caught by Brennan, the latter bowled - as it was left to Ben Wilkins (2*) and Thomas Baker (3*) to steer the hosts over 200, finishing on 204-8 from their 50 overs.

Halstead needed a solid start on a slow pitch if they were to chase down an achievable target, but they got the exact opposite, collapsing to 51-6 inside 16 overs to all but eliminate them from the contest.

Harry Pritchard (7) and Chris Rayner (7) took the scores to 14 before the former edged Rajan Singh (3-31) behind to Luke Youngs and the latter bowled by the same bowler to leave the visitors at 17-2 from 8 overs.

Josh Wells (9) mishit James Boulton (1-20) to Ben Wilkins at mid-off and Mark Johnson (2) was bowled by Wilkins (2-14) to further reduce Halstead to 41-4. Josh king (2) and Charlie Douglas-Hughes (19) were both then dismissed by Anthony Phillips (2-17) as Halstead were left reeling at 51-6.

Liam Jones (15) and Joe Morris (52) set about a rebuild, putting on thirty in seven overs for the seventh wicket, but Jones miscued and was caught by Samuel Charlton to give Wilkins his second wicket.

Morris was taking the game to the Haverhill attack as he tried to keep Halstead in contention, reaching his maiden 1st XI league half-century, four years after his first in a friendly against Chelmsford, striking seven fours and two maximums in a 43-ball knock, combining for 48 runs with Gary Dicker (11*) for the eighth wicket.

Singh returned to the attack to end Morris' innings, caught at fine leg by Harry Harding, and although Halstead had 18 overs left in their innings and required just over 4 an over it would prove to be too much.

Matt Cooper (5) top edged Dan Pass (1-2) to Wilkins and Lewis Brennan was caught by Youngs off Thomas Baker (1-2) as Halstead were bowled out with 13 overs to spare, 63 runs short of Haverhill's score.

Halstead now go into Saturday's game against Worlington - the last of the first half of the season - looking to end a four-game wait for victory.
