Maldon v Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 31 Aug 2019 at 12:00
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets

Match report Halstead -208-6 - beat Maldon - 204-7 - by 4 wickets

Halstead took a huge step toward securing their Division One status for another season with victory over Maldon at Drapers Farm on Saturday.

The 4-wicket win means Josh Wells' side sit 33 points clear of Lakenheath and outside the relegation places with two games and 40 points left to play for.

Maldon skipper Chris Harris won the toss and elected to bat, opening alongside Ieuan Thomas who soon gave an early chance to gully off Chris Rayner (0-25) which was not taken.

Thomas faced the majority of deliveries in the opening exchanges with Halstead restricting Maldon's scoring options, though Harris did start to get going in the 13th over, bringing up a half-century in the 21st over.

Halstead had to wait until the second over after drinks to finally get a breakthrough, Charlie Douglas-Hughes (3-18) striking, bowling Thomas for 33 after a 100-run opening stand.

They wouldn't have to wait long for a second wicket as Ed Clark (1-31) got his rewards for a persistent, heavy length when Max Bryant (1) chipped to Rayner at cover.

Harris found his scoring options restricted by an excellent spell of restrained bowling from Clark and Douglas-Hughes, the pair bowling 20 overs unchanged between them, returning cumulative figures of 4-49.

The frustration finally set-in for Harris despite a 43-run stand with Matt Anderson (19) and he was bowled by Douglas-Hughes for 71, the off-spinner also accounting for Anderson, caught at long off by Liam Jones.

Anderson's scalp sparked the loss of three wickets for nine runs as Josh Wells (3-53) bowled Ian Elliott (3) and had Jimmy Ainscough (5) caught by Josh Ruthven.

Matt Wild (9) and Ross Walpole (25*) took Maldon past the 200 mark, before the former was stumped off the final ball of the innings by Gary Dicker to give Wells his third wicket, Maldon finishing in 204-7, Halstead having fought back well from 100-0 at drinks.

Halstead's reply saw Harry Pritchard unfortunate to be adjudged lbw when not offering a shot to Matt Wild (1-24), but Chris Rayner scored fluently for his 34 before edging Ian Elliott (1-27) behind to Jimmy Ainscough.

Charlie Douglas-Hughes (44) and Josh Wells (76) came together with Halstead still needing 149 for victory but with 33 overs remaining.

The pair took Halstead within 61 runs of victory when Douglas-Hughes was bowled through the gate by Matt Anderson (1-45) for 44 soon after Wells completed his 8th half-century of the campaign.

Wells and Josh Ruthven (7) added a further 28-runs before Halstead endured a minor collapse; Wells himself caught one-handed by Toby Pugh of Ieuan Thomas (2-21), Ruthven bowled by Chris Harris (1-37) and Liam Jones (5) bowled by Thomas as the visitors fell to 184-6.

Mark Johnson (16*) and Joe Morris (15*) were left with the task of scoring the 21 runs needed for victory in the 7 remaining overs, both keeping cool heads to see Halstead home to a vital win.
