Wivenhoe v Halstead Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Sun 12 May 2019 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Lost by 42 runs
Match report
Halstead - 141 all out - lost to Wivenhoe - 183-7 - by 42 runs
Josh King's first game in charge of the NECL XI ended unhappily as for the second time in three weeks, an all-round Driaan Bruwer performance for Wivenhoe condemned Halstead to defeat.
Wivenhoe won the toss and elected to bat first, with South African pro Bruwer batting through the host's innings for an imperious 84 not out.
Halstead started brightly, Wivenhoe skipper Harry Burnett (6) edging Joe Morris (3-31) to skipper King at slip, Tom Durrell (3) soon following as he slashed Morris to brother Adam Morris at point.
Shorn Bobb (1-35) got in on the act when Wivenhoe keeper James Butcher (2) edged behind to Gary Dicker - the first of four dismissals for the Halstead gloveman - to leave the hosts at 47-3.
Morgan Whymark (1-13) strangled Joseph Nicholls (4) down leg-side to a smart catch from Dicker and Callum Hansey (2-34) had Ryan Savill (3) caught at point by Adam Morris as Wivenhoe floundered at 68-5.
Amidst the flurry of wickets Bruwer had been building a patient innings, taking advantage of the singles to be had in the Rectory Road outfield, finally forming a partnership with Jamie Barry (32) as the pair put on 61 for the sixth wicket.
Barry hit five fours in his 54-ball 32, picking up the scoring rate as the overs went on, with Josh King (0-25) and Charlie Douglas-Hughes (0-28) going wicketless through 13 overs.
The reintroduction of Joe Morris finally broke the stand, Barry edging behind to Dicker. Liam Evers (4) was then stumped by Dicker off Hansey, though an unbroken stand of 46 between Bruwer and Liam Fields (16*) saw Wivenhoe through to 183-7 from their 40 overs.
Bruwer took Hansey for 20 in his final over, finishing on 84 not out from 107 balls, including eight fours and two sixes.
With the required rate at under four an over, Wivenhoe set the field back early and challenged the visitors to play shots, something Shorn Bobb (14) obliged to, hitting a four and a six before getting beaten by one that kept low from Tom Durrell (3-24), Mark Johnson (4) having already fallen to the same bowler.
Charles Mallett (14) looked fluent in his 21 balls at the crease but became Durrell's third victim when caught in his crease lbw, leaving Halstead 46-3.
Charlie Douglas-Hughes (46) and Dave Brooker (10) kept the scoreboard moving along, but Ryan Savill (0-18) and Jamie Barry (0-16) were difficult to get away for more than singles to the boundary.
The pressure told as Brooker was left short trying to come back for a second, a direct hit from Durrell ending his stay at the crease.
Josh King (25) and Douglas-Hughes continued to rotate the strike, but the squeeze was well and truly put on with the twin introduction of Harry Burnett (3-35) and Driaan Bruwer (3-35).
Douglas-Hughes fell four short of what would have been a deserved 50 when he holed out to Bruwer off Burnett. Joe Morris' cameo 22 came at nearly a run a ball, but he charged past a Burnett delivery to be stumped by James Butcher.
Callum Hansey (2) offered a simple return catch to Bruwer, who then bowled Gary Dicker (0) next ball. Morgan Whymark (0) survived the hattrick ball but fell two later as Bruwer took three wickets in an over.
Josh King was the last man out - caught at long-off by Joseph Nicholls - to leave Adam Morris (1*) not out.
