Halstead Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Clacton on Sun 09 Jun 2019 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Lost by 15 runs

Match report Halstead - 186 all out - lost to Clacton - 201-8 - by 15 runs

An excellent half-century from Harry Pritchard and some late order battling from Mark Harris and Callum Hansey was not quite enough to overturn a strong Clacton side at Star Stile on Sunday.

Clacton skipper Kieron Parkes (30) won the toss and elected to bat, racing on to 61 alongside wicketkeeper Tom Sinclair (51) before offering a sharp return catch to Lewis Brennan (1-25).

Sinclair and Harlan Greig (43) built a 73-run stand for the second wicket, tight bowling from Mark Harris (0-40) and Chris Rayner (0-19) preventing the scoring rate from going too high.

The introduction of Chris Roper (2-34) and a change of ends for stand-in skipper Callum Hansey (3-38) paid dividends as both Sinclair and Greig fell within an over of each other.

Sinclair had passed his half-century but played on to Roper, whilst Greig mishit Hansey to Joe Morris at midwicket.

Matthew O'Brien (26) targeted the short boundary off Roper but fell into the trap off Hansey, caught at deep midwicket by Charles Mallett, Bradley Pitts (1) trying to hit Roper in similar fashion only to pick out Harry Pritchard at long on.

South African import Blaine Bannister (16) was stumped by some sharp glovework from Gary Dicker to give Hansey his third wicket, with both Pierson (0) and Peter Mann (2) run out in quick succession by Pritchard and Sam Johnson respectively.

Paddy Barker (18*) and Paul Lee (2*) saw Clacton through to a total of 201-8 from their 40 overs, Halstead fighting back well with the visitors having been 134-1 in the 26th over.

Neale Dakin (12) and Harry Pritchard (63) started the chase well for the hosts, punishing the bad balls until Dakin was adjudged lbw despite only muted appeals from the Frinton bowler Matt O'Brien (3-36).

Gary Dicker (0) was caught and bowled by the same bowler to leave Halstead at 32-2, but Pritchard and Charles Mallett (16) added 55 for the third wicket.

Mallett hit Daniel Carter (1-29) for four but attempted to pull him for six only to find Barker at deep square leg.

Pritchard had passed a deserved half-century that included eight fours and a six but was bowled by South African leg-spinner Harlan Greig (2-18) to leave the match in the balance.

Greig and Clacton skipper Parkes were extracting prodigious turn from the pitch with Sam Johnson (4) seeing one turn from outside off-stump to clip the top of leg and further reduce Halstead to 104-5.

Chris Rayner (16) and Joe Morris (17) kept Halstead well in the chase with less than a run-a-ball required, but when the pair fell in quick succession along with Lewis Brennan (1) it seemed like Halstead would succumb to an early defeat.

Morris picked out Greig at deep square leg off O'Brien whilst Rayner was bowled by another turning delivery from Parkes whilst Brennan was trapped in front by the same bowler.

Halstead still needed 70 from 11 overs with ninth wicket pair Mark Harris (26) and Callum Hansey (25) at the crease, but quick singles and effective running between the wickets soon started to bring the equation down.

Steady progress was being made, but the run rate continued to go up as both batsmen had to start taking more risks, taking 18 runs from two Blaine Bannister (0-51) overs.

Halstead needed 33 for victory from the final three, but the nagging line and length of Bradley Pitts (1-18) finally told, bowling Harris for a well-made 26.

It came down to 16 required from the final Harlan Greig over with Hansey on strike, but there was to be no fairy-tale ending as Greig's full toss came off Hansey's glove and clipped the top of off stump to give Clacton a 15-run victory.
