Halstead Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Colchester & East Essex on Sun 04 Aug 2019 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 93 runs
Match report
Halstead - 260-8 - beat Colchester and East Essex - 167 all out - by 93 runs
Josh Wells' 93 and Charles Mallett's career best of 79 helped set-up a 93-run win for the NECL side and kept alive their hopes of Division One survival.
Halstead won the toss and batted first, but an inspired opening spell by Oliver Hills (3-45) reduced the hosts to 38-3 as Morgan Whymark (0) and Ben Roper (16) were caught behind by Jamie McCarroll and Gary Dicker (13) was bowled.
Skipper Josh King (22) hit 4 fours as he rebuilt in a 48-run stand with Mallett for the fourth wicket but chipped a simple return chance to Colchester's overseas pro Johnny Bassett-Graham (1-57).
1st XI captain Josh Wells joined Mallett at the crease and the pair started to pick apart the Colchester bowling, hitting 26 fours between them in what would prove to be a pivotal 125-run fifth wicket partnership.
Mallett passed fifty for the first time in a competitive game for the club with a four through point, bringing up the milestone off 42 balls in the 23rd over, with Wells reaching his half-century off just 34 balls in the 31st over.
Oscar Dias (2-26) eventually made the breakthrough in his first over, Mallett departing caught-and-bowled for an excellent 79.
Wells continued to rotate the strike and punish any bad balls as he and Adam Morris (16) took the score past 250, but the former picked out Adnan Hasmi at cover to depart seven short of a deserved century.
Both Morris and Callum Hansey (4) fell to Jacob Drew (2-19), the former caught at mid-on by Max Dias, the latter trapped lbw, as they tried to push the score on, Halstead finishing on 260-8 from their 40 overs.
Adnan Hasmi (21) and Jamie McCarroll (14) opened for the visitors and it would be the latter who would depart first, Josh King (1-18) built pressure with a string of dot balls, causing McCarroll to drive straight back into the bowler's hands.
Johnny Bassett-Graham (0) could not repeat his century scoring exploits of the previous week as he drove Callum Hansey (1-24) straight to Charles Mallett at mid-off, who took a good catch above his head.
Hashmi and Oliver Hills (41) continued to accumulate for the visitors, with Hills belligerent to anything off line or length, hitting Hansey for three fours in an over and Wells for a big six into the pond.
Off-spinner Ben Roper (4-36) accounted for the pair of them however, as he found prodigious turn to bowl both Hashmi and Hills.
Colchester skipper Keir Young (17) was trapped lbw to give Roper his third wicket, whilst Oscar Baker (2) was stumped by Gary Dicker off Josh Wells (3-28).
The pressure told on Colchester as their collapse from 94-3 to 102-7 was completed when Rahul Viswanath (3) could only pick out Hansey at cow corner to give Roper his fourth wicket.
Trevor Edwards (27) and Max Dias (34) added 58 for the eighth wicket but were never in danger of threatening the required run rate as 13-year old twins Matthew (0-20) and James Tyson (0-14) bowled tight lines.
Edwards and Dias would both fall to Wells, the former caught and bowled, the latter stumped by Dicker, whilst the final wicket was that of Jacob Drew (0), caught by Morgan Whymark off Chris Roper (1-8) as Halstead wrapped up a comfortable victory.
