Halstead Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Springfield CC, Essex Sun NECL 1st XI on Sun 09 May 2021 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 22 runs

Match report Halstead beat Springfield to get their North Essex Cricket League Division One campaign off to the perfect start.

Skipper Lewis Brennan - taking charge of his first league game for the club - won the toss and chose to bat first on a pitch that was spared the previous day's heavy deluge.

Neale Dakin (14) and Mark Johnson (9) opened the batting for the hosts, with the former striking three fluent boundaries before miscuing a short-ball from Max Williams (3-36) to keeper Aarav Salil. Johnson followed soon after, the ball stopping in the pitch a little meaning the opener was through the shot early and caught at mid-off to give Williams a second wicket.

The tight opening spells from Williams and Joshua Attwell (0-17) meant Halstead had been restricted to 28-2, with both Charles Mallett (77) and Liam Jones (53) also kept under the cosh initially.

The pair did however start to get going when the bowling changed, eventually forming a match-defining 116-run partnership. Both former HCC Juniors brought up their first half-centuries of the season in the same over.

Jones departed with the score on 144 - caught by Ted Ashurst off the bowling of Yug Jasani (1-30) - with Mallett going on to finish on 77. Joe Morris (18), Josh King (6*) and Lewis Brennan (3*) helped Halstead finish on 197-5 from their 40 overs.

Lewis Brennan (1-33) dismissed the dangerous Charlie Prudence (5) early on in the Springfield reply, leaving Aarav Salil (15) and James Gooday (32) to patiently build at the start of the innings.

The introductions of Josh King (2-17) and Callum Hansey (1-13) stymied the flow of runs and the pressure told as King bowled both Salil and Ian Vince (0), whilst Hansey trapped Jasani (0) LBW and caught and bowled Gooday.

Hayden Plumb (0-22) continued his transition to senior cricket with a good spell of bowling before Shair Sullaman took his first senior Sunday wickets, returning figures of 3-40 to further slow the Springfield innings.

Max Williams (35*) and Joshua Attwell (25*) put on an unbeaten 50 for the 9th wicket, but the damage had already been done and Halstead ran out 22 run winners.
