Hadleigh CC, Suffolk 1st XI v Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 05 Jun 2021 at 12:00
Halstead Cricket Club Lost by 28 runs

Match report A frustrating 10th wicket partnership coupled with a middle-order collapse contributed to Halstead snatching defeat from the jaws of victory at Hadleigh on Saturday.

The hosts batted first and lost the dangerous Kudzai Maunze (14) when he edged skipper Ed Clark (1-43) to Josh Wells at first slip. Marlon Dias (37) and Josh Davey (18) negotiated the Halstead opening bowlers and moved the score on to 71 before the former was caught behind by Matt Cooper off Wells (4-43). Isaac Tombs (1) fell in the same fashion shortly after Davey was bowled by Wells to leave Hadleigh at 90-4.

Jamie Colcomb (21) and Thomas Piddington (23) took the score past 100, but Piddington top-edged Craig Spooner (1-45) to Joe Morris at square leg. Cooper claimed his third catch behind the stumps when Callum Morrin (1) edged a Wells delivery, though Colcomb and Ben Wallis (18) took on a minor rebuilding job, adding 28 for the seventh wicket.

The hosts fell from 145-6 to 164-9 as Ben Wallis was run out, Daniel Shanks (3) trapped LBW by Josh King (1-27) and Colcomb hit Liam Jones (1-10) to Morris at square leg. Halstead did not have the killer instincts required to finish off their hosts as Alex Milnes (20*) and Lewis Millions (18*) put on a valuable unbeaten 40 runs for the final wicket, the visitors not helping themselves with 30 extras the second-highest score.

For the first time, this season Halstead reached 50 without loss as Chris Rayner (32) and Shorn Bobb (18) laid a platform for the chase until the latter picked out Maunze in the deep off Daniel Shanks (1-46). Matt Cooper (2) soon followed, trapped lbw going back to one from Ben Wallis (2-29).

Harry Pritchard (33) and Rayner kept the runs ticking over, moving to 82 before the latter became the first of five victims for Lewis Millions (5-28), caught by Thomas Piddington. Josh Wells (23) and Pritchard took the visitors to within 78 runs of victory with seven wickets in hand when the former captain hit Maunze (1-34) straight to midwicket.

This sparked a middle-order collapse, with Halstead losing five wickets for 24 runs as Millions capped off an excellent day with his first five-wicket haul of the season.

Mark Johnson (12) and Liam Jones (11) kept Halstead in with a sniff, but it was too little too late as Hadleigh ran out 28 run victors.
