Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Worlington CC 1st XI on Sat 19 Jun 2021 at 12:00
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
Halstead continued their unbeaten run at Star Stile with a two-wicket victory over Worlington.
The visitors won the toss and elected to bat, with skipper Graham Ford (64) and Ben Atkinson (19) getting off to a solid start, adding 42 for the first wicket before Craig Spooner (1-26) had Atkinson caught by Ed Clark.
James Watson (3) struggled to get going in a 31-run stand with skipper Ford before becoming the second wicket to fall, Josh King (1-38) with the wicket. Ford was joined at the crease by his brother Richard (26), with the pair taking Worlington past 100.
Richard Ford survived a straightforward catching chance but his luck ran out when Greg Oxlade took an excellent diving catch to give Chris Rayner (2-29) his first wicket. Rayner bowled well in tandem with Liam Jones (3-31), with the pair combining to dismiss Arthur Summers (5), Rayner taking the catch off Jones.
Ford passed his half-century, moving on to 64 before edging Rayner behind to wicketkeeper Matt Cooper, leaving Worlington on 149-5. There were 20-run stands for Simon Nicholson (16) alongside Ollie Gallop (6) and Josh Lecompte (20), with both Gallop and Lecompte falling to Liam Jones, either side of Joe Morris (2-35) bowling Nicholson.
Craig Theobald (2) skied a catch to Clark at mid-off, but Carl Manels (3*) and Lee Thompson (3*) helped the hosts finish on 206-9 from their 50 overs, Halstead ruing the 39 extras they gifted the opposition.
Confusion reined early on in the Halstead reply as the wet outfield helped contribute to Chris Rayner's (1) dismissal, run out with just three runs on the board. Matt Cooper (27) and Harry Pritchard (24) kept the scoreboard ticking over, moving on to 48 before Pritchard feathered an edge behind to Gallop off Nicholson (4-41).
Josh Wells (98*) joined Cooper at the crease, but the latter soon found himself back in the pavilion, trapped lbw by Nicholson. Craig Spooner (14) scored at a run-a-ball alongside Wells until he became Nicholson's third victim, bowled by the left-arm spinner.
Halstead then lost skipper Ed Clark (2) and Joe Morris (5) in quick succession to find themselves in trouble at 122-6 in the 28th over. With the required rate at the very manageable 3.9 an over, Wells and Liam Jones (13) set about their task.
The pair rotated the strike well, whilst seeing off the Worlington slow bowlers Nicholson and Lee Thompson (1-45), Wells reaching his half-century before Jones eventually edged behind to Gallop off Josh Lecompte (2-29) having put on 48 for the seventh wicket.
Adam Morris (9) took up the support role with 37 runs required and three wickets in hand, Wells punishing the bad balls as he picked up his scoring rate to better than a run-a-ball. Morris clipping a fine boundary off his legs but top-edged Lecompte to Thompson, bringing Josh King to the crease, the Joshes combining to secure the 10 runs needed for victory and keep
