Halstead Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets

Match report HCC - 227-7 - lost to Woolpit - 232-7 by 3 wickets

Halstead fell to an agonising defeat to visitors Woolpit in the final over of an exciting contest at Star Stile.

Chris Huntington's 93 and Josh Wells' 41 were in vain as the hosts narrowly failed to defend 227 against a side that started the day level on points with Halstead.

Harry Pritchard was Huntington's opening partner, with the latter racing to 40 inside ten overs as he punished anything remotely off line from the Woolpit attack.

Pritchard (6) negotiated a swinging ball well, keeping his partner on strike in a partnership of 59 before dismissal at the hands of Barry Collins (1-20).

Sam Chapman (16) joined Huntington in the middle, with the opener soon passing his half-century with a four - one of 12 he hit along with a solitary 6 in his 128 ball innings.

The score ticked toward three figures, Chapman (16) hitting three boundaries and scoring at a run-a-ball before miscuing to Woolpit skipper Will Parker at midwicket, the first of four catches for Parker.

In-form Halstead captain Josh Wells was the new man, linking up with fellow left-hander Huntington as the pair dealt well with a turning Star Stile track.

17 year old left arm spinner Freddie Heldreich (2-31) broke the dangerous looking partnership when it was worth 73, Huntington (93) holing out to Oliver Whiteman on the boundary just 7 runs short of what would have been a deserved first century of the season.

At a pivotal juncture in the game, Parker held a catch at cover off Chris Wells (1-35) to dismiss his namesake Josh for 41, meaning the two set batsmen had departed in the space of 10 runs.

Charlie Douglas-Hughes (22) started to build an innings against the Woolpit spinners, but the dismisals of Craig Spooner (2) and Chris Rayner (3) - both caught by Parker off James Holmes (3-49) - meant Halstead's posting of a target stuttered in the final overs.

When Douglas-Hughes became Holmes' third victim - caught behind by Mark Estall - Halstead had lost five middle-order wickets for 36 runs.

Joe Morris (21*) and Ed Clark (5*) added valuable runs in the dying embers of the Halstead innings, closing on 227-7 from their allotted 50 overs.

The Woolpit openers - Parker (45) and Oliver Whiteman (48) - negotiated both the seam of Morris, Clark and Wells and the spin of Josh King and Spooner, looking comfortable on their way to a 95-run opening stand.

The depth of the Halstead bowling attack meant their 7th bowler was Andy Charlton (3-34) and the legspinner's introduction soon paid dividends as he trapped first Whiteman and then Parker lbw to put the hosts back in the game.

An excellent one-handed catch from Spooner accounted for James Deeley (3) as Charlton took three wickets in the space of 30 runs.

Corey Polyak (21) became King's (3-35) first victim, with Morris taking the first of three outfield catches off the left-arm spinner.

The pair combined again to dismiss Alex Jackson (12), Morris making up a huge amount of ground in the outfield to take the catch and leave Woolpit at 151-5.

This brought Holmes (37) to the crease to play what would prove to be a match-winning innings, scoring at a strike rate of 176 on his way to 37 crucial runs prior to the King/Morris combination accounting for a third wicket.

Josh Wells (1-30) bowled Tom Whiteman (19) with 11 runs still required, ensuring the game went to the final over with 7 needed for a Woolpit victory.

Chris Wells (30*) had been scoring freely and after scampered twos with Heldreich (3*) the first three balls of the over, he lifted King over the boundary ropes for a third maximum, finihsing unbeaten on 30 at a strike rate of 214.
