Halstead Cricket Club Won by 92 runs

Match report Halstead - 202 all out - beat Ipswich - 110 all out - by 92 runs

Halstead consolidated third position in the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship Division One with a 92 run victory over Ipswich at Clay Hall Farm on Saturday.

Half-centuries for Chris Huntington and Josh Wells paved the way for what turned into a comfortable win for the visitors.

In a game shortened to 45 overs to accommodate England’s World Cup quarter final with Sweden, Wells won the toss and elected to bat first.

As has become the norm this year, Huntington got off to a blistering start, dominating the 74-run opening stand with Harry Pritchard (17), racing to 40 from 23 balls after four overs.

The left-handed opener reached his 50 off 33 balls but was caught and bowled by Rob Southall (2-43) in the 12th over for 59.

Josh Wells promoted himself to number three and picked up where Huntington had left off, moving the score into three figures as he and Pritchard accumulated effectively.

Pritchard was the next man to depart, becoming Southall’s second victim courtesy of a leading edge, caught by Joe Rusby off the Ipswich seamer.

Josh Ruthven made just 6 - Rusby taking his second catch off the bowling of Jamie de Cosimo (1-48) - with Charlie Douglas-Hughes (0) caught behind by keeper Mark Burch off Louis Perrin (4-35) for 0.

Wells passed his half-century batting with Craig Spooner (25) and moved on to 57 before he was caught by Neil Parry off Mark Phillips (3-18), sparking a batting collapse.

Sam Chapman (11) was the only other batsman to reach double-figures as Perrin and Phillips wrought havoc on the Halstead lower-middle order.

Spooner and Josh King (7) fell to Phillips, whilst Perrin picked up the wickets of Chapman, Joe Morris (2) and Ed Clark (5) as Halstead were bowled out for 202 in the 44th over.

With an extended tea break to watch England’s relentless quest to bring football home, the Ipswich reply started later than usual.

The extended tea break did not seem to affect the Ipswich top-order, despite Craig Spooner’s early success with the first ball of the second over of the game, Clark taking the catch at short fine-leg.

Joe Rusby (21), Mark Burch (36) and Damien Smith (24) all got starts for the hosts as they moved on to 47-1 from 10 overs.

The introduction of Joe Morris and Josh King helped turn the game massively in the visitor’s favour.

Morris has not been in the wickets this year, but produced a fine spell of 3-18 from 10 overs, bowling his allocation straight through to great success.

Rusby and Burch were both out caught behind by Sam Chapman, with Ipswich 84-3 after 20 overs.

Three wickets then fell without the addition of any runs as Ipswich went from 92-3 to 92-6. Chapman and Morris combined again to get rid of Perrin (4), whilst King dismissed Smith - courtesy of a fine diving catch, low to his left from Huntington - and Neil Parry (0) in successive deliveries.

Though a hat trick wasn’t forthcoming, the spinner didn’t have to wait long for a third wicket, with de Cosimo (1) holing out to Harry Pritchard at deep midwicket - the Halstead man doing well to hang on to the catch after initially misjudging.

Andrew Charlton (2-8) picked up two wickets in the final overs as Nicholas Johnson (5) picked out Craig Spooner at cow corner and Matthew Porter (1) was trapped lbw.

King collected his fourth wicket of the game to finish things off - Ian Knight out lbw for 1 - as Halstead wrapped up a 92-run victory.
