Stuart Hammond's unbeaten 89 saw title contenders Eight Ash Green to victory over Halstead II on Saturday. The opener was dropped early on and made the most of his chance as the hosts chased down Halstead's 176-5.

Graham Wickes top scored for Halstead with 40, supported by Adam Morris (17), Andrew Clark (18) and Mark Johnson (19) as the Eight Ash Green opening bowlers - Mark Goodall (0-37) and Oli Firmin (3-62) - produced efficient 15 over opening spells.

Justin Rose (35*), Matt Cooper (14) and Liam Jones (7*) added runs in the final overs as Halstead closed on 176-5 from their 45 overs.

Eight Ash Green were missing both centurions from the meeting at Star Stile - James Parker and Alex Hammond - but Stuart Hammond (89*) struck 13 fours and a six, looking little troubled after his early drop.

Aaron Read (2-39) took the wickets of Oli Firmin (11) and Ollie Stovell (12) to reduce the hosts to 53-2, but Hammond and Will Spicer (15) added 50 for the third wicket.

Sam Walter (2-27) and Callum Hansey (2-23) took wickets at regular intervals as Halstead sniffed an upset, but Hammond never looked back and guided his team home.

Halstead sit sixth in Division Four, but just 8 points separate them from 10th placed Nacton, who they meet at Star Stile on Saturday.
