Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Mistley on Sat 01 Jun 2019 at 12:00
Halstead Cricket Club Lost by 62 runs

Match report Halstead - 171-7 - lost to Mistley - 233-9 - by 62 runs

Khalipha Cele's unbeaten 129 was the difference at Star Stile on Saturday as Mistley's South African pro's superb century set-up a 62-run victory on a slow pitch.

Jimmy Goff (5-35) took a five-fer in Halstead's reply as Josh King (59*) and Neale Dakin (48) offered the most resistance in a run chase that ultimately fell well short.

Halstead won the toss and elected to field, with Luke Robinson (1-19) taking the new ball on his league debut for the first eleven and picking up the wicket of the dangerous Daniel Goff (14) early on when the Mistley opener looped a catch to Neale Dakin at gully.

Sam Burkitt (18) was the next to fall, edging behind off Josh Wells (1-61) to Gary Dicker for the first of four dismissals for the Halstead gloveman.

Cele scratched around early in his innings but soon adapted to the slow pace of the pitch, picking off the bad deliveries from the Halstead bowlers as he accumulated runs at a good rate, building a stand of 43 for the third wicket with James Scott (19) before Scott hit one low to Josh King at mid-off to give Lewis Brennan (1-27) his 10th scalp of the Division One campaign.

Graeme Butcher (1) and Stuart Dove (9) fell either side of Cele bringing up his 50, the former caught and bowled by Josh King (2-21), the latter bowled by the same bowler as Mistley reached 117-5.

Wicket-keeper Harry Parkes (34) alongside Cele formed what would prove to be the largest partnership of the innings for the sixth wicket, adding 64 runs until Parkes edged Liam Jones (2-50) behind to his Halstead counterpart, Dicker.

Phil Palmer fell in the same fashion but to the off spin of Sam Walter (1-52) and Jimmy Goff (0) was run out without scoring as Cele approached three figures.

The South African would bring up a gritty, determined century in the next over and eventually finished on 129 not out from 125 balls, including 16 fours and a six, with Jack Fifield (1) stumped by Dicker off Jones - and Bruce Leeke (2*) helped the visitors to 233-9 from their 50 overs.

Halstead's reply started slowly and would prove how good an innings Cele's was as shot making became more difficult as the game went on.

Neale Dakin (48) and Mark Johnson (12) opened the innings for Halstead with Mistley bowlers Daniel Goff and Jack Fifield both returning figures of 0-18 from 7 overs, bowling nagging lines and lengths.

Johnson was the first man to depart, trying to work a Jimmy Goff (5-35) delivery to leg-side only to pick out Leeke at midwicket.

Josh Wells (22) followed as Halstead fell from 80-1 to 84-4, Goff wreaking havoc in the hosts' top order, the Halstead skipper miscuing a pull to James Scott at midwicket.

Harry Pritchard (2) and Liam Jones (0) fell in successive deliveries - Pritchard bowled and Jones under-edging to Harry Parkes - and when Dakin's stoic resistance ended - caught by Stuart Dove - Mistley spinner Goff had five prized wickets.

Josh King (59*) offered a bastion of resistance for Halstead in a fluid, unbeaten half-century but Cele (2-25) completed a fine all-round performance by bowling both Luke Robinson (4) and Adam Morris (7), leaving King and Sam Walter (14*) to get Halstead to 171-7, 62 runs short of their target.
