Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Worlington on Sat 29 Jun 2019 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Lost by 207 runs
Match report
Halstead – 95 all out - lost to Worlington – 307 all out - by 207 runs
A fourth consecutive defeat – this time at the hands of reigning champions Worlington – saw Halstead drop into the relegation places in Division One.
The Star Sile outfit were bowled out for just 95 when chasing 303 for victory, the 5 points accrued leaving them one point behind Lakenheath in 10th place and 11 points behind next week’s visitors, Woolpit.
Worlington batted first and despite an early chance offered when the prolific Ziaf Kulasi was on zero, looked untroubled.
Wicketkeeper Graham Ford (53) played the supporting role as Kulasi (64) – who went into the day as the leading run scorer in Division One – went on the font foot.
The all-rounder dominated the opening stand of 94, hitting 11 fours and a solitary six, racing to in a 51-ball 64, before holing out to Joe Morris at deep square-leg off Josh Wells (2-38).
Ford was joined by James Watson (75) and the pair continued to push on, rotating the strike, as the visitors passed first the 100 then 150 marks, with Ford bringing up his half-century in the process.
Wells struck again, taking a return catch to dismiss Ford to make it 157-2, but Watson and Worlington skipper Richard Ford (39) put together another big stand, passing 200 and approaching 250.
Watson became the third visiting batsman to reach a half-century, making his way to 75 off 69 deliveries before Richard Ford was stumped by Gary Dicker off Charlie Douglas-Hughes (3-35).
Watson found himself the first of three Josh King (3-42) victims, trapped lbw and sparking a minor collapse.
From 249-2, Worlington would be bowled out for 302, losing eight wickets for 53 runs as they looked to score quickly to end the innings.
Mark Nunn (33*) reached double figures but numbers six through eleven could not as Douglas-Hughes, King and Joe Morris (2-53) took wickets at regular intervals.
Tom Osborn (4) was bowled by Douglas-Hughes whilst Luke du Plooy (0) fell first ball to King, a second lbw victim for the Halstead left-armer.
Ben Atkinson (5) was the third scalp for Douglas-Hughes – caught by Luke Robinson at third man – whilst Johannes Diseko (1) lasted three balls before being bowled by King.
It was left to Morris to take the final two wickets in the last over of the Worlington innings, with Oliver Riddick (2) caught at cover by Wells and John Maynard (0) bowled first ball, leaving Morris on a hattrick at the start of next week’s game against Woolpit.
The early wicket of Harry Pritchard (4) – caught at slip by Richard Ford off Ziaf Kulasi (1-21) – limited Halstead’s reply, but they did reach 40-1 before a spree of wickets put them in the doldrums.
Halstead’s two leading run-scorers this term - Charlie Douglas-Hughes (6) and Josh Wells (0) – were both dismissed by John Maynard (2-24), the former bowled and the latter caught behind by Graham Ford.
When Tom Peacock (4) – returning to the 1st XI-fold for the first time since 2013 – shouldered arms to be bowled by Mark Nunn (1-13), the hosts found themselves at 47-4.
Chris Rayner top-scored for Halstead with 31, hitting 2 fours and a six before he too was bowled, this time by Oliver Riddick (3-22), Halstead had lost half their wickets for just 57 runs.
Despite some middle order resistance from Joe Morris (17) and Josh King (28), the rot did not stop.
Morris hit Johannes Diseko (3-14) to Tom Osborn and Liam Jones (0) was bowled by Riddick as Halstead limped to 74-7.
Luke Robinson (0) was the third of four ducks in the Halstead innings as he was caught by Nunn to give Riddick his third wicket before Diseko had King caught behind by Graham Ford.
Gary Dicker (5*) hit a four as Halstead strained to reach 100 and a batting point, but Lewis Brennan (0) was bowled second ball by Diseko and Halstead finished 95 all out.
