Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Tuddenham on Sat 08 Jun 2019 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets

Match report Halstead II - 178-6 - lost to Tuddenham - 181-2 - by 8 wickets

Halstead were beaten by Tuddenham in a game that looked seriously in doubt right up until lunchtime on Saturday as heavy rain persisted over Star Stile.

When the clouds finally cleared, and the excess water was spirited away, Tuddenham won the toss and put Halstead in to bat.

Justin Rose (29) started quickly alongside Andy Clark as the stand-in skipper played a watchful role at the other end, Rose hitting four fours as the pair put on 66 for the opening wicket.

As Clark began to pick up the rate Justin Rose was bowled by Andy Jakeman (1-47), bringing Luke Robinson (24) to the crease.

Clark quickly passed his half-century, targeting the short boundary off Charles Wilkens in particular, putting together a 53-run stand with Robinson as the pair punished bad deliveries and pushed singles to the frustration of the Tuddenham fielders.

Clark would be the next man to depart, finishing on 65 when miscuing Wilkens (2-51) to mid-wicket.

Luke Robinson fell in similar fashion to the same bowler, leaving Ed Clark (30*) to build a string of partnership with the middle order as Halstead scrambled to set a competitive total in a game reduced to 35 overs per side.

Debutant Paul Cutmore (0), David Baalham (3) and David Rawlinson (2) all fell to the leg-spin of James Shimmens (3-22) as Tuddenham tightened their grip on proceedings.

Dave Brooker (7*) and Clark saw Halstead through to 178-6 from 35 overs.

Halstead got on the board early in the Tuddenham reply as the visitors' wicketkeeper Alex Lack (16) hit Justin Rose (1-46) to Luke Robinson at mid-on.

David Ward (76*) survived two dropped catches - one a Ben Stokes-esque effort from Dave Brooker at mid-wicket, the second a more straightforward caught and bowled to Callum Hansey's first deliver - but offered few chances thereafter.

Ward and David Cross (48) built a 102-run partnership for the second wicket that would take the game away from Halstead after drinks.

Pushing the field between the wickets was key as the pair tended to play risk free shots, consolidating their position and pushing on without really offering chances.

Ward passed his fifty though Charles Mallett (1-31) bowled Cross just shy of what would have been a deserved half-century, Frans Bester (30*) joining Ward with 50 required for victory.

Bester attacked the Halstead bowlers, smashing five fours in his innings as he helped see Tuddenham home to an 8-wicket victory.
