Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI v Bury St Edmunds III on Sat 11 May 2019 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 72 runs

Match report Halstead III - 213-8 - beat Bury St Edmunds III - 141 all out - by 72 runs

Mark Bloomfield's Third Eleven got their first points of the season in a 72-run victory over their Bury St Edmunds counterparts at Star Stile on Saturday.

Winning the toss and batting first, Bloomfield (21) and Neale Dakin (53) put on 85 for the first wicket, with Oliver Selfe (2-39) and Johnny Fuller (1-50) bowling tight spells for the visitors.

Dakin passed his half-century but picked out Simon Loughe on the long-on boundary to give Bury and Fuller their first wicket. 14 runs later the skipper Bloomfield followed Dakin back to the pavilion, playing onto his stumps off Neil Jefferies (2-35).

Adam Morris (23) and David Baalham (12) put on 22 for the third wicket, but Baalham became Jefferies' second wicket, trapped lbw to make it 121-3, which was soon 134-4 as Morris miscued young spinner Daniel Dilks to Andrew Dilks at midwicket.

Charles Mallett (12) was joined by 15-year-old senior debutant Nathan Smith (10), the latter getting off the mark with a boundary prior to hitting a leading edge back to Selfe.

Mallett was then trapped lbw to one that kept low from the same bowler and when an ill-judged call from Callum Hansey (37*) left Mark Harris (1) out of his crease, Halstead were 168-7.

Hansey made up for his mistake, combining well with Morgan Whymark (9) for what would prove to be a pivotal 36-run eighth wicket stand, as the pair rotated the strike and ensured Halstead would pick up full batting points.

Whymark was dismissed by Kevin Dobson (1-30), leaving Steve Macklin (1*) to join Hansey and take the hosts to 213-8 from their 45 overs.

Morgan Whymark continued his fine form with the ball, bowling both Andrew Dilks and Sam Pennell for 0 to leave Bury at 2-2.

Kevin Dobson (51) joined skipper Simon Aldous (50) and started to turn the game back into the visitors' favour with a measured partnership. The pair both reached 50s, with Dobson taking a liking to the short boundary off Chris Roper.

With the required rate reducing to almost a run-a-ball and the partnership worth over 100, Halstead needed a breakthrough, which finally came through Chris Roper (7-44), when Dobson hit straight to Mark Harris at point.

Oliver Selfe (19) joined his captain, putting on 18 to keep them in the hunt but when Aldous found Morgan Whymark in the deep, Roper had his second wicket and Bury's chase was in tatters.

Johnny Fuller (6) and Selfe tried to keep things ticking along, but Roper was proving increasingly difficult to get away, the left-armer bowling Selfe and Nils Carter De Jong (0) in successive deliveries for his third and fourth wickets.

The field closed in on Simon Loughe for the hattrick delivery, which was steered around the corner into the arms of Nathan Smith, giving Roper a hattrick and five-wicket haul.

Callum Hansey (1-42) had Fuller caught at square leg by Whymark before taking a catch himself at silly mid-off to dismiss Daniel Dilks (0) for Roper's sixth victim.

Evamar Aldous - who had earlier bowled a tight spell of 0-16 from 4 - was left the not out batter as Roper trapped Neil Jefferies (0) lbw to finish with 7-44 from 11.4 overs, Bury falling from 140-4 to 141 all out.
