Colchester & East Essex v Halstead Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Sun 16 Jun 2019 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Lost by 104 runs
Match report
Halstead - 104-9 - lost to Colchester & East Essex - 208-5 - by 104 runs
Halstead were soundly beaten at Castle Park on Sunday, but more importantly was the contributions from Junior club members and ensuring a game of cricket was played.
Injuries, holidays, Father's Day and unavailabilities meant the fixture was in question as late as Saturday afternoon, but a young side with an average age of 19 made the short trip to Colchester.
Winning the toss and bowling first after a heavy rain shower, Halstead couldn't make inroads as Adnan Hashmi (71) and Jack Hobbs (96) compiled a 155-run opening stand, Hobbs particularly impressing with his shot selection.
13-year old Matthew Tyson (0-28) impressed with a nagging line and length in his NECL debut as Morgan Whymark, Lewis Brennan and Callum Hansey all went wicketless in their opening spells.
Hobbs passed his half-century first with Hashmi following not long after, Liam Jones keeping wicket tidily before passing the gloves on to Hansey to allow him to bowl.
Hobbs and Hashmi took 37 off Jones' three overs and the hosts looked set for a mammoth total in the reduced 35 over a side game, but Ben Tosland (2-32) got the breakthrough when Hobbs edged through to stand-in keeper Hansey four short of what would have been a well-deserved century.
Jones (1-45) found his groove and went for just eight more runs in his next four overs as he and Tosland kept the run rate down - Matthew Tyson taking a good catch at point of Jones to dismiss Kiwi Johnny Bassett-Graham (5) and Lewis Brennan diving to his left at mid-on to dismiss Hashmi off Tosland.
Prathim Bhattacharyya (17), Keir Young (5), Tom Jasinski (0*) and Jordan Milburn (4*) helped Colchester past the 200 mark, finishing on 208-5 - Whymark (1-33) and Brennan (1-36) returning to have Young caught by Hansey and bowl Bhattacharyya respectively.
Halstead's reply was permeated with excellent bowling from the young Colchester attack as wickets were shared around.
Ed Clark (7) and Liam Jones (6) were bowled by Vikas Agarwal (1-10) and Jordan Milburn (1-20) respectively, whilst Josh Ruthven (12) picked out Hobbs at cover off Oscar Dias (3-8).
Charles Mallett (7) was hit on the wrist from an accidental beamer and struggled on only to be trapped LBW to Dias, with Sam Hume (2) - who earlier had been lively in the field - falling the same way.
James Tyson (7) - the second 13-year old in the side - held his own with the bat as he and Ben Tosland (5) saw off the Colchester bowling, but was hit in the grill with a short ball and bowled a ball later by Rahul Viswanath (2-26).
Tosland miscued Bassett-Graham to Max Dias at mid-wicket leaving Halstead staring down the barrel at 59-7.
Lewis Brennan (13) and Callum Hansey (22*) rebuilt the innings and ensured the match would go the distance, with some excellent running between the wickets - including an all run four and an all run five - as the match petered to a conclusion.
Viswanath bowled Brennan and Max Dias returned to have Morgan Whymark (3() top edge one to Bassett-Graham at slip, but Hansey and Matthew Tyson (0*) batted out the overs to a 104-run defeat.
Despite the result, the junior members - both Tysons and Sam Hume - looked at home in Senior cricket whilst seven of the eleven made their way through the HCC Colts/Juniors system and two more joined the club at 16, with youthful talent on display for both sides.
