Match report An unbeaten century from James Handscombe was enough to set up a nail-biting 7-run win for Wivenhoe II over their Halstead counterparts at Star Stile.

Handscombe hit 15 fours and a six in his 118*, putting on 120 for the first wicket with Ross Evers (52). The introduction of Callum Hansey (1-27) broke the stand, but two further 50-run partnerships – 52 for the second wicket with Michael Canavon (22) and 54 for the fifth wicket with skipper Paul Farrow (34) – took Wivenhoe to a mammoth April score of 253-5 from their 40 overs.

Chris Roper (2-39), John Clinch (1-67) and Luke Robinson (1-55) took the wickets, but the total always looked a hard ask.

Matt Cooper (34) and Adam Morris (66) put on 58 for the opening wicket, but Cooper was the first of four victims for Henry Sawyer (4-71). Mark Johnson (7) was caught behind by Farrow off Andrew Green (1-57) to leave Halstead at 73-2.

Skipper Justin Rose (93) and Morris put on 94 for the third wicket, both batsmen reaching their first 50s of the season before Morris miscued Sawyer to Liam Holyman at mid-off.

Rose enjoyed stands of 36 with Charles Mallett (9) and 25 with John Clinch (10) but despite his best efforts both he and his team fell 7 runs short of milestones. Luke Robinson (10*) and Callum Hansey (1*) were left needing 18 off the final over but could only muster 10.

Rose felt his side will have taken a lot out of the game. The 2nd XI has the chance to build on their performance when hosting Witham IIs this weekend.
