Haverhill CC 1st XI v Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 17 Jul 2021 at 12:00
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
Halstead continued their winning ways with a blistering chase of 208 against Haverhill on Saturday. Having bowled the hosts out for 207, Halstead reached their victory target in the 25th over with 7 wickets in hand.
Haverhill won the toss and elected to bat, with Joe Morris (4-30) striking fifth ball of the game, bowling Sam Hartshorn (0) for a duck. The visitors have often troubled the opposition top-order and it was again the case here as Chris Palmer (16) edged Morris behind to Josh Wells before Christopher Garrard was cleaned up to reduce Haverhill to 31-3 with Morris taking all three.
Chris Rayner (2-38) got in on the act shortly after when he bowled Carl Bradford (15) but from 57-4 the hosts set about on a rebuild. Opener Sam Street (42) had been patient as wickets fell around him, but found company in first Mohammad Chowdhury (37) and then Mahmudul Hassan (36), sharing stands of 55 and 58 for the fifth and sixth wickets respectively.
Chowdhury hit 5 fours and a pair of maximums in his 38-ball stay at the crease but was caught at point by Wells to give Rayner his second wicket, whilst Hassan edged skipper Ed Clark (1-40) behind to Sam Hawes. Street's 119-ball vigil ended shortly after when he hit a return catch to Josh Wells (3-24) to leave Haverhill 178-7.
Russell Davis (11) and Ben Wilkins (16) kept the score ticking over and passed the 200 mark, but Haverhill lost their final three wickets for seven runs as a pair of catches at long-off for Matt Cooper off Wells accounted for Davis and Wilkins before Morris returned to the attack to have Max Egan (3) caught behind by Hawes. Haverhill finished on 207 all out with an over to spare.
Halstead came out of the blocks with real intent, as Chris Rayner (70) regularly sent the Haverhill attack to the fence. Chris Palmer (1-30) did dismiss Shorn Bobb (5) in the fourth over, caught at mid-on by Hartshorn, but the score was already 48-1 at the end of the over.
Harry Pritchard scored at better than a run-a-ball but watched on from the other end as the quieter partner as Rayner punished loose bowling to reach an astounding 23-ball half-century in just the sixth over, having hit 10 fours and a six.
Halstead reached their 100 in the ninth over with Rayner departing for 70 shortly after when hitting Max Egan (1-30) to Chowdhury at point, his 36-ball stay was just short of a strike rate of 200. The visitors continued to score at a run-a-ball, with Liam Jones (33*) joining Pritchard, helping the latter to his half-century and Halstead's 150 in the 18th over.
Pritchard was trapped lbw by Chowdhury (1-31) at the end of the 19th over with 42 runs required for victory. Craig Spooner (34*) would score the majority of these, hitting 4 fours and a brace of sixes in 15 balls, including the four to win the game off the first ball of the 25th over.
The result leaves Halstead third in the Division One table with eight games to play.
