Match report
Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship
Division Three
Halstead II 219-9 beat to
Needham Market 176 by 43 runs
The second eleven secured a valuable win at home to Needham Market, thanks in part to all-round performances from Andrew Charlton and Dave Elsbury.
In batting first, plenty of the Halstead batsmen got starts yet could not convert to big scores. Will Clark (19), Graham Wickes (22) and Simon Steel (28) all doing as such at the top of the order.
With wickets falling at regular intervals, Halstead needed runs from somewhere. David Baalham (35) made a determined contribution to top score, but when Charlton (31no) and Elsbury (27no) came together, Halstead only had 173 on the board.
The pair batted sensibly and blunted the Needham attack, adding an unbeaten 52 runs for the final wicket.
Needham's reply started well if a little slowly, with S Mortimer (49) top scoring. However when the spin of Charlton (3-39)) and Elsbury (2-41) came on, the tide turned. With batsmen struggling to get runs, they had to play more attacking shots, resulting in added pressure.
Cath Dalton (3-36) picked up late wickets as Halstead bowled Needham out for 176.
