Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Braintree on Sat 06 May 2017 at 13.00
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report Halstead's First Eleven secured their first victory of the season with a 7 wicket defeat of Braintree at Star Stile.

Joe Morris' second five-wicket haul in as many weeks and Josh Wells' all-round performance - four wickets and an unbeaten half-century - set the platform for the win.

Wells won the toss and put the visitors into bat, paying immediate dividends as Chris Leech was trapped lbw by the skipper for 0.

Dean Bass (10) and Louis Cant (9) also fell to Wells, with Braintree struggling at 23-3.

Daniel Chalk and William Jackson set about a rebuilding process, adding 93 runs for the fourth wicket as Braintree began to wrest control back.

The reintroduction of last week's seven-wicket man Morris broke the partnership, an impressive catch from Dave Elsbury at gully accounting for Jackson, who had hit five boundaries in his 55-ball 31.

Chalk passed his fifty before Wells took a fine catch at slip to dismiss Rory Ainsley (4), Daniel Garner was caught behind by Sam Chapman for the same score and Jeremy Hollingsworth (0) was trapped LBW to give Morris his fourth wicket.

Daniel Chalk (61) became Morris' fifth victim, Wells again the catcher at slip, with a wicket apiece for Wells and Harry Veal - with a superb catch from Chapman with the gloves - wrapping up Braintree's innings for 144.

Halstead's reply got off to the worst possible start as Chris Huntington (0) was trapped LBW third ball by Jackson.

Mark Johnson hit his first ball for four, hitting three more before he was caught at slip by Garner off of Cant for 20.

Charlie Douglas-Hughes (7) was caught behind off an under-edge through to Hollingsworth to give Jackson his second wicket and leave the hosts at 35-3.

Wells and the in-form Harry Veal steadied the ship, constructing a match winning partnership.

The pair were quick to latch on to any bad deliveries, hitting 18 fours and 4 sixes between them, with Wells passing 50 for the first time this year.

Veal played the supporting rile, finishing on 40 off 38 deliveries, with Wells wrapping up the victory with a 6, finishing unbeaten on 78 from 54 balls.
