Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Maldon II on Sat 15 Sep 2018 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets

Match report Halstead II - 225-2 - beat Maldon II - 222-6 - by 8 wickets

Halstead IIs escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth at Star Stile, defeat of the visitors Maldon II condemning them to Division Five.

Maldon batted first and Ben Belfrage (17) and Andrew Barnes (31) made a steady start against the Halstead openers Justin Rose (0-25) and Joe Morris (2-44).

Sam Walter (1-56) had Belfrage caught at slip by Harry Pritchard before Morris bowled Barnes - Walter's wicket his nth of the season, meaning he finished top of the Second XI averages with 23 @ 15.17.

From 57-2, Ieuan Thomas (70) and Paul Bardo (29) added 63 for the third wicket, the breakthrough coming from Chris Rayner (1-31) when Bardo could only find Neale Dakin.

Matthew Shinn (24) and Michael Foster (10) fell either side of Thomas - the latter having earlier survived being caught due to a no ball courtesy of the wicket keeper's gloves being in front of the wickets - as the right-hander top scored with 70.

Ben Foster (5*) and Reece Bawden (23*) saw Maldon through to a competitive 222-6, having capitalised on some lax Halstead bowling.

Halstead's reply was set-up nicely by Harry Pritchard (29) and Neale Dakin (103*) as the pair put on a. 69-run opening stand.

Pritchard was the first to fall, bowled by Ieuan Thomas (1-50), but this brought together the prolific partnership of Dakin and Mark Johnson (60).

Dakin finished the season in the same fine fettle that he started it with, striking the ball cleanly and offering no chances on his way to yet another century.

Johnson also passed his 50, the pair building what would be a season-defining 125-run stand, before Johnson was bowled by James Ellis (1-32).

Charlie Douglas-Hughes (20*) got back on the run-scoring track after a lean few weeks to see Halstead home to a Division Four survival, having dragged themselves out of an unwanted relegation battle at the final hurdle.

Dakin finished the Division Four season with 666 runs @ 111.00, including three 100s and two 50s, whilst Johnson had 258 runs @ 36.83 with three 50s.
