Match report Halstead II - 167 all out - lost to Stowmarket - 184-9 - by 17 runs

The second eleven managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory after falling 17 runs short of their total at home to Stowmarket.

The visitors had earlier set 184 for victory, dominated by George Tilbrook batting through the full 45 overs for 78.

Tilbrook and Dale Watling (29) put on 54 for the first wicket as Stowmarket batted first at a sweltering Star Stile.

Rob Harris (2-32) returned to the Halstead side and claimed the wickets of Watling - lbw - and Michael Ives (18) - caught by Sam Walter - in a spell of 2-32 from 11 overs.

Walter (3-44) and fellow spinner Chris Roper (4-61) then bowled unchanged through the rest of the Stowmarket innings, with wickets falling at regular intervals.

Kevin Holland (1) was trapped lbw by Walter and both Paul Blake (12) and Andrew Holding (17) miscued shots through midwicket to be caught by David Baalham at slip off Roper.

Craig Watling (5) found Mark Johnson running in from the boundary off Walter and the off-spinner had his fourth wicket, holding on to a caught and bowled to dismiss David Pratt (4).

Henry Griffiths (5) and Kierran Haynes (3) were both caught off Chris Roper - by Matt Cooper and Justin Rose respectively - looking to add quick runs either side of Harry Maguire’s opener for England. The raucous cheers accompanying this were unfortunately not for a particular good piece of fielding from Harris at the same time.

Tilbrook offered a caught and bowled chance to Walter shortly after passing 50, but the final wicket pair managed to add what was a crucial 32 runs to finish on 184-9.

Brothers Dale (4-49) and Craig Watling (1-31) caused havoc in the Halstead reply. After a good start, moving on to 38 for no loss, Dale bowled Justin Rose (12).

Adam Morris (37) - promoted this week to open the batting - shared a further stand of 24 with Andrew Clark (7), but both knicked behind to Michael Ives in quick succession to give Dale Watling his second and third wickets.

Andy Rose (8) was bowled to become Watling’s fourth victim before Craig Watling bowled Mark Johnson (9) to leave Halstead in strife at 85-5.

David Baalham (11) and Matt Cooper (29) moved the score into three figures, but Baalham was well caught by a leaping Craig Watling at extra cover off Kierran Haynes (3-18) and Sam Walter (7) found David Pratt off the same bowler, with Halstead still 65 runs short of their target but with the required rate at a manageable 5 an over.

Cooper and Rob Harris (17*) kept the score ticking along, but when the former narrowly failed to clear Paul Blake at mid on off Kevin Holland (2-33) the runs started to dry up.

Callum Hansey (14) took ten from a Holland over and Harris it a boundary off Haynes to make it 17 needed from three overs.

It would be too little too late though as Hansey tried the same shot as Cooper and again failed to clear Blake off Holland, with Chris Roper (0) skying to Pratt off Haynes to give Stowmarket a narrow victory.
