The first of the two-match series for the Tom Sewell Trophy ended in a draw at Star Stile on Sunday.

One of two timed matches in the season saw a Wickham St Paul - sporting seven players that have turned out for HCC in recent seasons - batting first.

Harry Pritchard (101*) batted through the innings, hitting 9x4s and 1x6, finding support from Andy Charlton (11), Mark Waithman (11), Jerry Baker (21) and Richard Holman (15) on his way to an unbeaten century.

Morgan Whymark (3-34) and Sam Johnson (2-30) were the pick of the bowlers, though young legspinner Kian May (0-32) was unfortunate not to be in the wickets.

The Halstead reply was slow to get going as Ian Saville (4-3-2-0) and George Pritchard (10-5-6-4) proved increasingly difficult to get away.

Liam Jones (24) and Sam Hawes (9) faced 100 balls between them as the young Halstead side patiently frustrated their visitors.

Whymark (17) was the only other bat to reach double figures as the allotted overs ticked down - the teams playing 20 overs from 6pm.

John Fazakerley (4-2-13-1) and Dave Minter (3-1-6-1) picked up wickets, leaving Pritchard and Callum Hansey (9-1-28-2) to bowl at the death.

The latter took the wicket of Chris Roper in the final over, to leave three balls for Dave Hawes to survive, which he did, claiming the draw.
