Wivenhoe II v Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 27 Apr 2019 at 12:30
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 52 runs
Match report
Halstead II - 221-9 - beat Wivenhoe II - 169-8 - by 52 runs
Halstead II got their first victory of the season courtesy of a clinical all-round performance against their Wivenhoe counterparts.
Ian Pont (57), Neale Dakin (40) and Cath Dalton (30) made contributions with the bat as Halstead set a competitive total of 221-9 from 40 overs before 4-61 from Callum Hansey limited Wivenhoe to 169-8 in reply.
Like the 1st XI fixture at Star Stile, Wivenhoe won the toss and put Halstead in to bat, with Dakin and Justin Rose (10) opening for Halstead.
The pair put on 44 before Rose slashed James Handscombe (1-34) to Paul Farrow at gully. Dakin then forged a 41-run stand with Pont, moving toward a half-century, but edged Louis Homewood (1-31) through to Andrew Green at slip.
Andy Rose (5) was trapped lbw by Green (1-34) shortly after Halstead brought up their three figures, going to drinks at 117-3.
Cath Dalton - returning to the Halstead fold after two years - and Pont added 62 for the fourth wicket, the latter passing his half-century with his tenth boundary, but the pair fell in the same over to Michael Canavon (5-48).
Mark Harris (0) was bowled by the same bowler, however Matt Cooper (19), Charles Mallett (14), Luke Robinson (12) and Callum Hansey (10*) all hit boundaries as the tail wagged, taking Halstead to 221-9 from their 40 overs.
Canavon had Cooper caught by Liam Fields and then completed his 5-wicket haul with an LBW of Robinson. Euan Tickner (1-29) took the other wicket, that of Mallett.
Handscombe (14) edged behind to Steve Macklin off Justin Rose (1-23), but fellow opener Canavon (33) found willing company in Homewood (26) and put on 56 for the second wicket.
The introduction of Hansey changed the game in Halstead's favour, trapping Canavon lbw and then having Will Morgan caught at gully by Mallett first ball made it 74-3.
Homewood became Mallett's second catch, hanging on at mid-off to give Robinson (1-18) his first wicket of the season, Robert MacDonald (0) then chipped Hansey to Dakin at cover to leave Wivenhoe reeling at 86-5.
Liam Evers (5) was called back after being given out LBW but lasted little longer as he gloved Hansey behind to Macklin, with Fields (13) soon following suit, hitting Harris (1-35) to Robinson at midwicket.
Andrew Green (36*) joined Tickner (29) and a 51-run eighth-wicket stand briefly threatened a Wivenhoe chase, but Hansey's economical 13 over spell had put Halstead in pole-position, the seamer unfortunate to not collect a maiden five-wicket haul for the Second XI.
Pont returned to the attack to dismiss Tickner - caught by Cooper - and the hosts shut up shop, finishing 52 runs short of their target.
