Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Coggeshall II on Sat 22 Jun 2019 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Match report Halstead II - 207-9 - lost to Coggeshall II - 211-6 - by 4 wickets

Halstead's search for a win against their Coggeshall counterparts continues, with the last victory back in 2013, after a 6-wicket defeat on Saturday.

The day's cricket at Star Stile was preceded by a minute's silence held in memory of the late Lloyd Rayner, with the Halstead flag flown at half-mast in respect of the club legend that passed away on Tuesday.

Halstead batted first and got off to a fast start, Neale Dakin (45) hitting Coggeshall's Australian opener Dylan Gordon (2-72) for two boundaries in the first over.

Gordon soon found his length and got rewards as Justin Rose (4) was bowled to make it 20-1.

Dakin and Andy Clark (45) proceeded to build a 61-run partnership as Coggeshall rotated their three bowlers Gordon, Rory Miller (3-66) and Mark Butler (4-42).

The opener moved on to 45 and looked to clip Butler off his legs but could only find square-leg and was dismissed 5 runs short of what would have been a deserved half-century, something that became a theme in the Halstead innings.

Clark and Luke Robinson ran well between the wickets as they moved the score past 100, but Clark would be the second batsman to be dismissed on 45 as he edged Gordon through to wicketkeeper Barry Edwards.

Simon Steel (0) was bowled by Mark Butler and Halstead dropped to 116-4, though Luke Robinson (45) and Ed Clark (34) added 65 for the fifth wicket, hitting three boundaries apiece in innings punctuated by clever, risk-free shots and running between the wickets.

When Ed Clark was trapped LBW for Butler's third wicket Halstead had been in a strong position of 181-4 but the dismissals of Andy Rose (8) - stumped by Edwards off Butler - and Dave Baalham (1) - adjudged LBW to Miller - put the brakes on Halstead.

Luke Robinson became the third player to be dismissed for 45, playing an ugly scoop only to be bowled by Miller with two balls remaining, whilst Callum Hansey (2) was bowled off the final delivery to close on 207-9, Charles Mallett (3*) left not out.

Halstead started reasonably well with Adam Robinson (10) hitting Justin Rose (2-40) straight to Chris Roper at gully, but lax bowling meant runs were easy to come by for the visitors.

Ben Crayston (13) survived a huge LBW shout to Luke Robinson early on in his innings but would fall in that fashion to give Rose a second wicket and when Barry Edwards (19) picked out Callum Hansey at fine leg off Ed Clark (1-39), Coggeshall were 71-3.

Ed Pink (37) survived an lbw shout of his own, first ball, but he and Andrew Goding (89*) proceeded to build a partnership that would be the turning point of the game.

The Halstead attack could not make inroads as the pair added 94 for the fourth wicket, Goding passing his 50 in the process.

The introduction of Callum Hansey in the 27th over gave Halstead a glimmer of hope as Pink offered a simple catch to Simon Steel at cover, but a further 30-run stand between Goding and Fergus Wishart (16) took Coggeshall within 14 runs of their target.

Wishart chipped Hansey to Luke Robinson at mid-off and Darren Green (2) was bowled by Chris Roper (1-62), but Dylan Gordon (4*) hit his first ball to the boundary and Coggeshall were 4 wicket winners.
