Match report Halstead’s broke their duck in Division One at the second time of asking, with a 7-wicket win at East Bergholt on Saturday.

The side featured two debutants, overseas signing Max Chu and former Coggeshall seamer, George Blackwell.

Halstead won the toss with Josh Wells - the stand-in skipper with Ed Clark unavailable - electing to field first.

George Foster (82) put on 48 for the first wicket with John Hambrook (18), before a pair of lbws from Wells (2-27) reduced East Bergholt to 59-2.

Foster and Kian Schwartz (82) frustrated the Halstead attack, building a formidable 149-run partnership for the third wicket, passing the 200-run mark in the 34th over.

The tide turned with the re-introduction of Blackwell to the attack, dismissing Schwartz and Foster in consecutive deliveries, with gloveman Max Chu taking both catches.

Though a hattrick was not in the offing, Blackwell soon had more wickets, bowling Alex Price (1) and having Callum Woolston (2) caught behind by Chu, either side of a run out from Wells.

The former Coggeshall man would complete a debut five-wicket haul by bowling Harry Nightingale, leaving Ryan Vickery (1-39) and an Adam Dellar run out to clean up the tail, Bergholt falling from 208-2 to 234 all out.

Halstead lost two wickets in quick succession in reply as Chris Rayner (1) and Vickery (0) departed, but Chu (28) and Wells took the scores to 50.

Chu followed his teammates back to the pavilion, edging Henry Hunter (3-63) behind for his third wicket.

That would be the final wicket Halstead would lose as Wells (111*) and Adam Dellar (81*) put on an unbeaten 188 for the fourth wicket, the former reaching his first century of the season, the latter securing a maiden half-century for the club since joining from Sudbury.
