Lakenheath v Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 03 Aug 2019 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report Halstead - 218-4 - beat Lakenheath - 217-7 - by 6 wickets

An all-round team display helped Halstead to a vital victory against fellow strugglers Lakenheath on Saturday.

Josh Wells' side avenged their earlier season defeat with a six-wicket victory over their hosts, one that increased the gap to the relegation places to 18 points.

Lakenheath won the toss and elected to bat first, Chris Baugh (39) and Dom Palmer (13) putting on 46 in 14 overs for the first wicket, Palmer hitting a sharp return catch to Josh Wells (2-20).

Baugh was joined by home skipper Shane Leech, but followed Palmer back to the pavilion when trapped lbw by leg spinner Liam Jones (2-40).

Adam Horrex (13) was the third man to depart, holing out to Harry Pritchard at deep midwicket to give Jones his second scalp of the afternoon and leave Lakenheath 94-3 after 31 overs.

Leech had been initially watchful but started to play more attacking shots as his innings went on, heavily targeting the legside, bringing up a 59-ball half-century with a four off Callum Hansey.

Harrison Milner (9) became Wells' second victim, caught by Josh Ruthven at mid-off before Leech and Danny Rodic (28) built a 69-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Rodic threw caution to the wind with two large sixes and some confident if dangerous running between the wickets as he and his captain elevated the home side past the 200 mark.

After many close calls, Harry Pritchard threw down the stumps, leaving Rodic short of his ground, however Leech continued what had become an inventive innings, hitting boundaries with paddles, reverse sweeps and scoops as he approached a century.

It would not be for the Lakenheath captain as he was stumped seven runs short by Gary Dicker off Charlie Douglas-Hughes (1-37), Mark Milner (1) also departing in the final over, run out thanks to good work from Callum Hansey and Gary Dicker.

Halstead had a target of 218 for victory and were quickly one down as Danny Rodic (2-39) caught Harry Pritchard (1) in his crease to bowl him with one that kept a little low.

Chris Rayner (23) and Charlie Douglas-Hughes (13) moved Halstead toward 50 but the pair departed in quick succession as poor calling left Douglas-Hughes stranded to be run out and Rayner was trapped lbw by former Essex man Darren Cousins (1-50).

Josh Wells (52) and Josh Ruthven (66) came together at a tricky time at 54-3 but stood firm in the face of the Lakenheath attack and began accumulating runs.

Wells was the early aggressor, playing some sumptuous drives in a risk-free innings, taking Halstead into three figures and reducing the runs required below 100 before bringing up his half-century with a powerful off-drive.

Danny Rodic had caused problems for the visitors in his opening spell and was brought back into the attack to bowl out his allocation, trapping Wells lbw to spark jubilant scenes amongst the home players.

Ruthven - on 28 at the time - was joined by Liam Jones (33*), the latter peppered by some short-pitched bowling as Lakenheath aimed to get a foothold back in the game.

The pair however withheld the Lakenheath advance, batting sensibly and minimising the risks in their run-scoring, though both were quick to punish any lax bowling that came their way.

Halstead were 138-4 when Wells departed, but with 23 overs in hand the required run rate was under 3.5 an over and never crept ahead of this point, Ruthven reaching an excellent, patient half-century off 87 balls in the 42nd over.

The chase was an exercise in a measured, paced innings and Ruthven saw the visitors to a richly deserved victory with a single in the 45th over.
