Match report Halstead II - 112 - lost to Easton - 113-2 - by 8 wickets

Halstead were well beaten at the hands of Easton in their season opener at Star Stile on Saturday.

The hosts won the toss but Easton opener Nathan Jenkins picked up the first five wickets in a sparkling eight over spell, ending with 5-14.

Neale Dakin (6), Andy Clark (16), Justin Rose (0), Ian Pont (0) and Andy Rose (2) were Jenkins' victims as Halstead fell to 41-5.

Spinner Athul Sarangan (3-22) entered the attack and picked up the wickets of Sam Hawes (3) and Charles Mallett (2) to further reduce Halstead to 54-7.

Amidst all the chaos, Gary Dicker (30) had been stoic in his resistance, slowly accumulating against probing Easton attack, but became the third player to edge to Adam Polley, off Robert Taylor (1-61).

Mark Harris (9) became Sarangan's third victim and Halstead were staring down the barrel at 80-9.

Aaron Read (33) provided some much needed impetus from number 10, alongside Callum Hansey (2*) adding 32 for the final wicket before Read hit a simple return catch to Wayne Mitchell (1-13).

Halstead's total of 112 was well below par on an excellent batting track. Easton took their time early on to get off to a good start, Adam Polley (40) and Ben Harper (50*) building a solid opening partnership.

Aaron Read (0-21), Ian Pont (0-16) and Justin Rose (0-28) bowled without reward, with the first wicket stand worth 74 when Callum Hansey (1-30) was introduced into the attack.

Hansey drew an edge from Polley, through to keeper Andy Clark to depart for 40, Mark Harris (1-14) dismissing Robert Taylor (15) in the same fashion a few overs later.

Easton never looked in doubt and Ryan Scopes (2*) was at the crease as Harper brought up his half-century and the victory with a two off Hansey.

Halstead II face their Wivenhoe counterparts at Wivenhoe on Saturday.
