Match report Halstead II - 189 - lost to Worlington II - 204 - by 15 runs

Halstead fell agonisingly short as hosts Worlington took their first victory of the Division Four season.

Andy Rose (52) and Simon Steel (48) provided the base for the chase, but wickets for Lee Thompson (4-32), Paul Marston (3-47), Craig Woollard (2-35) and Matthew Wittish (1-45) did enough to ensure Worlington took the spoils.

Father and son duo Chris (5-53) and Ben Roper (3-54) were in the wickets as half-centuries from Thomas Baugh (61) and Matthew Wittish (58) helped the hosts to 204 all out.

Worlington won the toss and batted first, getting off to a swift start before Justin Rose (1-26) and Callum Hansey (0-45) settled in to a groove and kept runs at a premium on a small and quick outfield.

Rose got Halstead on the board to make it 46-1 when Matthew Peachey (24) picked out Ben Roper at cover.

Baugh and Jonno Peachey (10) moved the score along to 74 before the latter was bowled by Chris Roper, bringing Wittish together at the crease with Baugh, the pair putting on 72 for the third wicket.

Baugh passed his half-century and kicked on, only to edge Ben Roper to Rose at slip for 61, Nicholas Gordon (2) soon following, bowled by Chris Roper.

Lee Thompson decided attack was the best option and immediately targeted the short, straight boundaries, hitting two fours and two sixes and surviving a dropped catch as he helped Wittish pass his half-century and take the score to 180.

Wittish picked out Dave Brooker at long off to depart for 58 and with that Worlington fell from 180-4 to 204 all out. A Callum Hansey catch off Ben Roper saw Thompson depart whilst Billy Riddick (0) was run out by Matt cooper without facing.

Chris Roper bowled Ben Wittish (0) and Ollie Gallop (5) was caught behind by Andrew Clark; a fifteen run last wicket stand between Craig Woollard (9) and Paul Marston (4) took the hosts past 200 but the former was stumped by Clark to give Roper a third and Halstead maximum bowling points.

Justin Rose (16) got off to a quick start but was left helpless as a Woollard delivery kept low to trap him LBW, with Cooper (11) following soon after, caught down the leg-side by Gallop off Marston.

Andrew Clark (16) and Simon Steel (48) rebuilt from 32-2, adding 58 as Halstead got back into the chase, the latter hitting 7 fours and 2 sixes before Clark mishit Woollard to Baugh at mid-off.

Steel fell eight runs later when he picked out Jonno Peachey at long off from Lee Thompson's first delivery, but skipper Andy Rose (52) and Charles Mallett (14) got things going again, moving Halstead within 100 runs of their target.

Mallett hit a sumptuous cover drive off Matthew Wittish but next ball his check drive only found the hands of Woollard at long on and when Dave Brooker (0) was LBW when attempting to sweep Thompson and Ben Roper (3) hit the same bowler to Peachey at long off Worlington were back in the ascendancy.

Callum Hansey (6) helped Rose to his first half-century of the season, an innings featuring 7 fours, but Hansey hit a simple return catch to Thompson, leaving the game in the balance.

Halstead needed less than a run-a-ball, but the pressure told as Rose holed out to Matthew Wittish off Marston and despite the best efforts of Alex Rippingale (8*) and Chris Roper (2) it was too little too late, Marston bowling the latter to see Worlington to victory.
