Witham II v Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 15 Jun 2019 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets
Match report
Halstead II - 174 all out - lost to Witham II - 175-4 - by 6 wickets
Halstead were left ruing missed opportunities both with the bat and in the field as they fell to a 6-wicket defeat to their Witham counterparts on Saturday.
The total of 174 having been asked to bat first was always subpar, but dropped catches proved vital in a disappointing defeat.
Justin Rose (15) and Andy Rose (4) took 15 from the first over of the innings but both found themselves back in the pavilion soon after, both falling to Luke Brown (2-23) as Justin edged behind to Ben Tinham and Andy picked out Jack Pawsey at cover.
Andy Clark (9) and Tom Peacock (12) rebuilt from 24-2 but the introduction of left-armer Ollie Cooke (3-26) accounted for both in quick succession, Clark bowled, and Peacock caught at midwicket by Jack Sambrook.
Ian Pont (45) and Ed Clark (34) made the most meaningful contributions with the bat in the middle order, the pair putting on 64 for the fifth wicket, hitting 11 fours and 2 sixes between them, until Pont miscued Paul Bellehewe (2-46) to Ben McKendry at deep midwicket.
Charles Mallett (23*) joined Clark and the pair kept the score ticking over, but Clark could only pick out Luke Brown at deep square-leg to give Bellehewe his second scalp and leave Halstead at 133-6.
Ben Roper (16) counterattacked, as he and Mallett moved Halstead past 150, but when a mix-up saw Roper run out by Ben Tinham, Halstead collapsed, losing four wickets for just six runs.
Callum Hansey (0) got a leading edge to Michael Headley off Cooke whilst Steve Macklin (0) was trapped lbw and Chris Roper (3) bowled by Jack Sambrook (2-39) as Halstead were bowled out for 174.
In reply, Witham opener Michael Headley (18) hit Justin Rose (1-26) straight to Charles Mallett at mid-off only for the ball to be called a no-ball as Rose accidentally broke the stumps in his delivery stride.
Ian Pont (2-39) did soon get a breakthrough, bowling Dave Wilson (8) with one that kept low, Jack Sambrook (5) following soon after having gifted a catch to Chris Roper at gully off Justin Rose.
When Michael Headley fell - bowled by an excellent delivery from Pont - the hosts were reeling at 35-3, with Ollie Cooke and Jack Pawsey new at the crease.
The former struggled to get Rose away initially whilst the later was scratchy early on.
Pawsey survived top dropped catches - both hard chances at slip and cover - as well as many shots that narrowly evaded the fielders' grasp, but the pair battled well and continued to pick up runs and keep the scores moving.
Callum Hansey (0-36) and Chris Roper (0-30) went wicketless as Halstead bemoaned their missed opportunities.
Cooke (83*) passed fifty and began to look more fluent, punishing bad deliveries as Pawsey (49) also worked hard to accrue his runs as the pair took the game away from Halstead through their 133-run partnership.
Pawsey finally succumbed, trapped LBW by Ben Roper (1-26) a run shy of his half-century, but it was again too little too late as Cooke and Ben Tinham (3*) saw the hosts home.
